Until I experienced homebirth, I don't think I truly understood just how special this kind of care could be. 🤍
I birthed my baby in the place I felt safest, home.
No unfamiliar room. No strangers coming and going. No unnecessary noise or interruptions. Just my own space, the people I loved, my dog and a midwife I knew and completely trusted.
She knew me, my baby, my wishes and my fears. She supported me through pregnancy, stood beside me while I birthed my baby, and then came to our home for six weeks afterwards to care for us, weigh our baby and help us find our feet.
By the end, she wasn't just my midwife. She feels more like family (our fairy godmother Ruth).
Homebirth allowed me to feel safe enough to surrender to labour and let my body do what it needed to do. I felt heard, respected, loved and incredibly empowered.
I wasn't just another number moving through a system. I was a woman being genuinely cared for.
I would choose homebirth again in a heartbeat.
And that's why what's happening in Australia right now scares me.
From 1 January 2027, the current insurance exemption for homebirth ends. The new requirements could mean many of the registered midwives who currently attend homebirths as the required second midwife can no longer do so.
And without a second midwife, a supported homebirth may simply not be possible.
For regional and rural women, this could be devastating. Where we live, we are already incredibly lucky to have one amazing private midwife servicing an enormous area of around 200km. We don't have an abundance of options to begin with.
I cannot imagine wanting another baby and discovering that homebirth, the place I know I feel safest giving birth, is no longer an option available to me.
Homebirth won't be every woman's choice. But every woman deserves a choice.
Hospital. Birth centre. Home.
Every woman deserves the right to decide where she feels safest bringing her baby into this world, with qualified care beside her.
So I'm asking you, even if homebirth would never be your choice, please help protect it for the women who would choose it.
