But, research with elderly individuals showing gains in cognitive skills and well-being compared to controls after a 16-week sensory motor program for primitive reflex integration. It's a conversation so many parents and teachers have had. But what if the issue isn't effort or willpower at all?

Before a child can access what's being taught, their body needs to be ready to learn — because all learning begins as sensorimotor experience.

Posture. Movement. Coordination. Sensory processing. These aren't separate from "real" learning — they're the foundation it's built on. It's the sensorimotor processes that help signal the brain to wire and fire for better learning and function.

When we understand and address the body-based learning processes, the teaching that follows tends to land more effectively.

FNQ Principals and school leaders - This one is for you.

For my Far North Queensland network, here's something worth passing on if you know a school leader up this way.

I've spent years working across neurodevelopmental practice and education systems, and one pattern keeps showing up: the learning challenges schools spend the most energy on are often framed as a student who won't engage, or a teacher who needs to improve their practice. But sometimes neither is true. Rather, a student's nervous system that isn't developmentally ready for what's being asked of it in a teaching situation can't engage easily. That often looks like misbehaviour or disengagement. That's not blaming the child or the teacher. It's naming a mismatch, so it can be seen, named, and addressed.

I'm running a session on exactly this on August 4th in Cairns, with two Body to Brain Learning @ School Regional Facilitators, Terry Davidson and Nadine Vielle (Integrated Learning Kinesiology). If you're a Principal or school leader in FNQ, or know one who'd value a genuinely different perspective on this, I'd love to see them there. Tag/share this with someone it might be useful for.
