Found this on the wall of the little eco shop at IndigiScapes and had to stop 🌿

"Changing habits. It all starts with you."

It's about sustainability. But standing there, I couldn't help thinking about couples.

Because so many people come to therapy waiting for their partner to change first. If they'd just listen. If they'd just try. And I get it, it's a very human place to stand.

But here's what we know. You can't change your partner. What you can change is the pattern the two of you are caught in.
Every couple has a dance. You step back, they chase. They go quiet, you push harder. Round and round. And here's the hopeful part: it only takes one person to change their step.

When you move differently, the old dance can't keep going the way it did. The whole thing has to shift.

So it does start with you. Not with fixing yourself, and definitely not with blame. Just with the courage to move first.

A native bush doesn't strive to bear fruit. It stays connected to its source, gets tended by someone who cares, and grows where it's planted. Marriage works the same way. Fruitfulness isn't about trying harder. It's about the conditions you're growing in together.

Here are three that matter most.

1. Turn toward, don't turn away.
The health of a marriage isn't decided in the big moments. It's decided in the hundred small ones a day, when your person reaches for you with a look, a sigh, a "come and see this," and you choose to turn toward them. This is the daily sunlight your relationship grows in. Small, ordinary, easy to miss, and it's everything.

2. Tend the soil through repair.
Every couple ruptures. The fruitful ones aren't the couples who never fight, they're the ones who come back and repair. Own your part quickly. Extend grace freely. Don't let the sun go down on your anger. Repair isn't weakness, it's pruning, and pruning is what makes room for new growth.

3. Stay deeply grounded.
The fruit you can see is shaped by the roots you can't. When both of you stay connected, to God and to each other, through prayer, through worship, through the ordinary rhythms of a shared life, the fruit comes in its season. You don't have to force it. You just have to abide.

Because love is a verb, not a 'vibe'. And fruitful marriages are grown and tended. 🌿

If this is the season to tend your shared soil, our Created for Connection weekend is coming up on the 22nd and 23rd of August: Two days to slow down, reconnect, and grow something that lasts. Link in bio 🤍
