Building mentally resilient athletes 🏋🏼‍♂️

As part of my coaching and rehabilitation, I have a big focus on the mental side of an injury aswell as the physical. Tom only began running over 14 months ago and then due to this, his body blow up with multiple injuries over this period due to little exposure previously. However despite big periods away from running Tom perceived and by training strength as well as running he was able to complete 100km run within 12 months of just starting to run?!

This was not without struggles and horrible conditions on race day led to new injuries and now a month later Tom is back and running and looking forward to his next 100km!

It’s been a pleasure to train Tom and look forward to continuing his journey!

TCG Run Assessment 📈

At the Cube gym we are now doing running assessments focusing on strength, single leg endurance, asymmetry between calves, hamstrings and also contact time and force generation.

How we do this?

We measure:
- mid thigh pull - for overall strength measure and force generated
- Single leg gastrocnemius hold - for comparison of strength between 2 legs and endurance of calf between tests
- Single leg 90 degree hamstring bridge - for comparison of strength between 2 legs and comparison to average population
- Drop Jump - measure of contact time and difference between sides

If you are interested follow the link in bio and book in via the cube gym or DM for more info

Where can you find Apogée Health? 🏋🏼‍♂️

To start your career you need to surround yourself with mentors and opportunities. I put myself out there from the first day I moved to sydney and have had great experiences so far in gyms and sports coverage.

I am so lucky to now be working in two world class facilities where I get to further my learning while also use my skills and knowledge for Physio and S&C.

If you are interested in rehabbing an injury or even just improving for your sport and getting ready for ski season or winter swells.

What is Apogée Health? ⛷🏄🏼‍♂️

Building physically and mentally stronger humans

Apogée Health came from an idea of mine when I was living in Whistler, BC. It revolves around creating an atmosphere for outdoor people to thrive.

Pumping down the line 🏄🏻‍♂️
Getting down the line isn’t just wiggling your bum and get the fins engaged it’s about:
- elevating the inside rail up the wave
- compressing and rising with the wave
- keep the shoulders, hips and eyes down the line

There is uncertainty ahead but you get to decide how you react.
Stay safe out there and when you can avoid unnecessary large group meet ups and always wash your hands

Never too late to start 🏄🏻
Cath decided gym training was starting to get boring then went to yoga and then found surfing but realised she was lacking stability to perform and wanted also to focus on longevity 🧘🏻
So Cath’s focus is to build the basics back up and then challenge her stability to be able to stay balanced on the board and keep a healthy spine

If you aren’t fuelling the engine properly, of course it won’t work run at its best 😴🍞🥑
If you think of your body as a car ready for action, you wouldn’t deprive it of fuel to drive or services to repair brake pads or suspension. So why not fuel and fix your body correctly.
Some simple nutrition guideline to live by are aim for 1.6-2.2g/per kg of BW for muscle building and aim to ingest this throughout the day and avoid losing processed meals and red meat. I could go on forever about nutrition but muscle rebuilding is the focus of this post along with sleep.
For better sleep follow simple tips:
1) Encourage 7-9 hours per night and consider naps during the day if less than 7 hours sleep per night
2) Sleep in cool (but not cold), dark room
3) Avoid using electronics or personal devices in bedroom
4) Limit technology use 1 hour before bed
5) Reduce caffeine after lunch, and minimise alcohol at night

What’s your favourite shoulder exercise 🏄🏻‍♂️🏊🏼‍♂️
-
-
-
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and for that reason we need to a lot of different push and pull exercises in different planes of motion to help stabilise it
-
All these exercises are part of the advanced surf program phase 1, which is great for all surfers, swimmers and other paddle sports
-
-
1. KB sn**ch - great for overhead stability but technique is important
2. Single Theraband Row - food unilateral shoulder row for controlled shoulder blade retraction and protraction
3. Barbell Prone Row- great power pull focusing on the lower traps and rhomboids
4. Dumbbell External Rotation with Theraband Pulling for Accessory Internal Rotation Work- great advanced shoulder stability exercise focused on movement of the humeral head within the socket at a neutral position

Movement is always key 🏋🏼‍♂️

With most musculoskeletal conditions, a progressive movement/exercise plan has the best results in treating injuries guided by a professional.

Movement isn’t always in the gym and it is a mixture of flexibility, stability and strength.

If your practitioner is not guiding you to move more and your treatment is not ‘active’, being that you are the one doing things to your body, then you need to find someone else.

Gone are the days of purely manual therapy fixing any kind of issue and you relying on ‘passive’ treatment. This does not provide motivation or resilience for your body and the research shows. A good guided plan treatment plan includes some passive treatment but mainly active treatments that adds load to the body to make in move better and stronger.

If you have any questions on what a good research based treatment program looks like, please message me 👋🏼
