Does pickle juice actually stop muscle cramps? 🥒
This week’s sports nutrition rabbit hole completely surprised me and I had to share!
For years, the theory was that pickle juice worked because it replaced sodium and electrolytes lost through sweat.
Makes sense, right?
Except... the research found something really interesting.
In some studies, muscle cramps improved within about a minute of drinking pickle juice.
The problem?
That’s far too quickly for the sodium to be absorbed into your bloodstream and change your electrolyte levels.
So if pickle juice does help relieve cramps, it’s probably not because it’s replacing electrolytes.
Instead, the current leading theory is that the strong taste of pickle juice stimulates receptors in your mouth and throat, sending signals to your nervous system that may reduce the abnormal muscle activity causing the cramp.
So…
It might be a neurological effect, not an electrolyte effect.
Does that mean hydration and electrolytes don’t matter? Absolutely not. They’re still incredibly important for performance, thermoregulation and overall health.
It just means they may not explain why a cramp stops so quickly after drinking pickle juice.
Anyway, that’s my little rabbit hole for the day 😂 hope it shook up your algorithm!
