Happy holidays everyone! Thank you so much for welcoming my new private practice so warmly into our community these past few months!

Christmas may be a joyous time for you and your family, or it may be a challenging time. I hope that however it lands this year, you find moments to rest and recharge- you deserve it!

I will be taking a break over the Christmas period. My last day will be Wednesday 19th December, returning Tuesday 7th January, and I will respond to contact when I return 🎄✨

❗️"BE CAREFUL"❗️

Such a common and automatic phrase we use with the little ones in our lives! But a child can't understand or assess risk like we can as adults, so all "be careful" does is communicate danger and may make a child feel anxious. It doesn't help them understand what to do, and over time, may subconsciously tell them that the world is dangerous. Often "be careful" says more about our own fears than how risky a situation is.

Other things to try:
✨ Communicate clearly what your child is to do with the risk ("Slow down", "Use two hands there")
✨ Help your child develop words for risk ("Do you feel safe/steady/wobbly", "Do you see the cars there?")
✨ If necessary, communicate a clear boundary with reason ("You can go to that branch and no higher, because the higher branches are thin and can snap")
✨ If there is low risk, physically sit on your hands or bite you tongue to remind yourself that your little one is safe

AND REMEMBER TO BREATHE, YOU'RE DOING AMAZING!

✨OUR RESPONSIBILITIES CHANGE WITH OUR ROLE✨

Ask yourself, what things am I responsible for as a parent? How are these similar or different to my responsibilities as an aunt/friend/neighbour/collaegue?

We are ALWAYS responsible for how we act and react, regardless of our role.

Funny, but also kind of thought-provoking?? Thanks for the giggle and this repost

Such a vital thing to remember, one that I often forget! We can spend way too much energy, time and effort trying to control others.

In doing so, we not only deplete our resources, but also don't give others credit/accountability/responsibility for their actions.

"PLAYING IN MUD DEVELOPS MY BRAIN!"

When children play in mud they:
✨ Use all 5 senses, stimulating brain activity and development
✨ Coordinate fine and gross motor movements (balance, slip and slide!)
✨ Develop creativity (mud can be moulded into a cake, a p**p, a tower, a giraffe!)
✨ Develop immune responses to allergens and bacteria
✨ Build a connection to nature

As my Oma (grandma) always said, "There's no bad weather, only bad clothing choices!"

Separation anxiety in children is not an individual "problem" within the child.

Yes, all children are unique and some temperaments are more shy, or sensitive to new environments or new people.

However, a large factor in separation anxiety occurs in the relationship between the primary caregiver and the child.

Understanding your own fears, reactions, and attachment style, as well as learning tips and strategies for separations can be a game-changer for separation anxiety management and your child's confidence.

COMMENTATING YOUR DEVICE USE 🤳

I came across this concept recently and wanted to share.

Before personal tech, family tech use was communal. The home phone would ring, a child might answer, and everyone could hear the conversation. Someone would be watching TV in the communal living room and people would comment on it as they walked by.

Now, tech use is private. We text to arrange and appointment, we look up a recipe for dinner, we look on our calendar and see it's our cousin's birthday. But all your child can see is you looking at your device. It can be helpful for family connection, attachment, and a child's sense of self if they are included in tech use where possible and appropriate, particularly younger children.

Try this:
✨Commentate on what you're doing ("I'm ordering flowers for Jane's birthday!")
✨Involve your child ("Which flowers do you like best- these or these?")
✨Watch something all together, rather than all on your individual devices (take turns choosing)

BREATHE. We are the first generation EVER IN HISTORY to raise children with personal tech, social media and AI. So really, what the hell is the "right" thing anyway?! I'm sure there'd be information online that contradicts this post... 🤯

BREATHE, you're doing amazing!
