Do it anyway is the theme of this year’s Women’s Health Week (7–11 September) — a reminder that looking after your health doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to start.

Dr Katie Gardner, GP and CCQ Lead Clinical Editor, is encouraging women to focus on what matters most to them right now:

“As GP's, we regularly see women who are balancing work, family, caregiving responsibilities and the many other demands of daily life. In the midst of looking after everyone else, it's often your own health that gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

This Women's Health Week, I'd encourage women to focus on just one area of their wellbeing that feels most important right now, whether that's nourishing their body, being more active, prioritising quality sleep, supporting their mental health, or making time to connect with others.

The good news is that meaningful improvements in health don't have to come from dramatic changes. Small, sustainable steps can make a real difference over time. You don't need to do everything at once. Start where you are and, in the spirit of this year's theme, do it anyway.”

That first step might also be catching up on something you’ve been putting off.

Practice nurses can play a powerful role in identifying cardiovascular disease risk before symptoms appear.

CCQ’s Wide Bay Primary Health Coordinator Ellen McDermott shared this message at the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) Festival of Nursing in Melbourne 30 July – 1 August, presenting the PHASES conference poster, Who is key to driving cardiovascular disease prevention in primary care?

The presentation highlighted how practice nurses can identify hidden risk, use data and digital tools to support earlier assessment and help patients make positive changes to their cardiovascular health.

Early PHASES insights included 460 uses of the Primary Sense CVD Risk Screening, Recall & Treatment Report across participating practices between February and May 2026, reinforcing the important role nurses can play in earlier cardiovascular disease prevention.

PHASES (Preventing Heart Attacks and Stroke Events through Surveillance) is delivered by Country to Coast Queensland in partnership with Queensland Primary Health Networks and is co-funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.

Congratulations to Ellen and the PHASES team on sharing this work with the primary health care nursing community.

When you don't have a safe place to sleep, getting healthcare or wellbeing support you need can feel impossible.

This Homelessness Week, we're sharing the story of three mobile health responses that brought primary care directly to people experiencing homelessness and disaster displacement in Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Gympie.

Rather than asking people to navigate the health system, response teams and partners went to where people already were, delivering 153 service contacts and connecting people with medical, mental health and other support services along the way.

"The impact on patients was both tangible and meaningful... this work has been genuinely energising and reaffirmed why programs like this matter so much." — ForHealth

Because when housing is out of reach, healthcare shouldn't be.

Almost 1 in 5 Australians aged 45 and over experience chronic pain (AIHW). For many, feeling heard and having access to clear, evidence-based information can be an important part of finding a way forward.

This National Pain Week, we are sharing the story of Cindy Harris, one of 30 Community Pain Champions trained through the COMPANION pilot across Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Fraser Coast.

Community Pain Champions were equipped to take contemporary pain knowledge into their communities, encourage informed conversations and support people to consider active approaches to managing persistent pain alongside clinical care.

As Cindy explains:
“I believe that many sufferers of persistent pain feel lost, without hope and largely in a ‘too hard’ basket. I would like to think that a new way of understanding persistent pain would provide hope and direction for the future.”

For Cindy, the aim was not to promise a miracle cure, but to start honest conversations that could lead to greater understanding, connection and support.

Read Cindy’s story and learn more about the completed COMPANION pilot: https://ow.ly/Mmo150Zt2Mx

National Pain Week runs from 26 to 31 July 2026.

The COMPANION pilot was funded by CCQ through the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing's PHN program and Resilient CARE. COMPANION was delivered by The University of Adelaide and Pain Revolution initiative.
