✨LGBTQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day✨

The creation of the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day in 2020 was the first time in history that an awareness day was formed to highlight domestic, family and intimate partner violence and abuse occurring in LGBTQ+ communities.

Held annually on May 28, LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day is the only day like it in the world.

The right to live a life free from violence and abuse is a person’s most basic human right, but for many LGBTQ+ people, this is not a reality. Over 60% of LGBTQ+ people will experience domestic, family and intimate partner violence and abuse in their lifetime, yet victim/survivors remain largely invisible with incredibly low levels of reporting.

With your support, we can ensure that there are no invisible victims in the future and that everyone, no matter what their sexuality or gender identity, can feel and gain hope and courage.

The Gender Centre would like to take the opportunity to recognise National Reconciliation Week.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is "All In" and it is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

"All In" makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us. The GC takes this shared responsibility to heart.

Please participate to have your voice heard.

On May 17th we acknowledge International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia.
IDAHOBIT is the anniversary of when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases.
While we celebrate this milestone and other advancements in LGBTQIA+ equality, we also recognise and hope to bring awareness to the ongoing struggles and discrimination faced by the community.
