💜 Walking for Epilepsy - a story of family, resilience and support 💜

Our Lived Experience and Participant Lead, Amanda Anderson, is a proud Mum to two boys, Hamish (12) and Lucas (18), who have both been incredibly supportive of her epilepsy journey.

Last year, Lucas took part in the Walk for Epilepsy for the very first time. This year, he’s taking it a step further by joining the AEP team’s Walk for Epilepsy for the first time, walking alongside our team to support his Mum and the wider epilepsy community. 💜

Lucas has been by Amanda’s side from the very beginning of her epilepsy journey. He was born when Amanda was 28 and living with drug-resistant epilepsy. When Lucas was almost 3, Amanda underwent successful brain surgery to treat her epilepsy, this was a life-changing experience but also made caring for a young child particularly challenging.

Lucas didn’t have the typical childhood experience. His mum wasn’t able to drive until he was 4, and epilepsy shaped many aspects of their family life. But despite those challenges, Lucas has thrived.

Now 18, Lucas is passionate about agriculture and is currently working on a cattle property in regional Victoria. And that means he’s clocking up the kilometres VERY quickly! 🐄🚶‍♂️

In fact, Lucas is currently leading the AEP board in both distance walked and donations raised! 🙌

We couldn’t be prouder of Lucas for turning his personal connection to epilepsy into action & advocacy and for continuing to walk alongside his Mum.

Amanda Anderson, Debbie Marques, and Emma Beildeck from the AEP Team were thrilled to attend the inaugural Melbourne EmpowerHER Epilepsy Forum, hosted by Epilepsy Action Australia and Australian Women with Epilepsy. 💜

It was a powerful and uniting day, bringing together people with lived experience, healthcare professionals and advocates to share knowledge, connect and build hope for the future.

We were especially honoured to see our Lived Experience and Participant Lead, Amanda Anderson, take to the stage to share her personal journey with epilepsy and speak about the work of the Australian Epilepsy Project.
Amanda’s voice and experience are at the heart of what we do, and we’re incredibly proud of her contribution to this important conversation.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to and attended this inspiring forum. Together, we can continue to strengthen connections, amplify lived experience and drive positive change for people living with epilepsy. 💜

🧠 A landmark moment for epilepsy care in Australia.

Today, the Australian Epilepsy Project welcomes the Senate Community Affairs References Committee’s landmark report, Epilepsy in Australia.

📣 The report captures, in unprecedented detail, the experiences of Australians living with epilepsy and the systemic challenges they face, from delayed diagnosis and fragmented care to geographic inequity and limited access to specialist services.

For the AEP, this is more than a report. It is an opportunity to turn evidence into action.

The AEP was established to help address many of the challenges identified by the Committee: improving access to advanced epilepsy testing, reducing geographic barriers, connecting people with specialist expertise, and building the infrastructure needed for a more coordinated national approach to epilepsy care.

🤝 We welcome the Committee’s 27 recommendations and look forward to working with governments, clinicians, researchers, epilepsy organisations and the broader community to help translate them into meaningful change for Australians living with epilepsy.

💜 Meet Emma and another reason why we’re stepping up for Epilepsy

Yesterday we shared Amanda’s story. Today, as our Australian Epilepsy Project team steps up for epilepsy, we want to share another incredible story, Emma’s.

Emma has lived with epilepsy since she was 9 years old. She knows firsthand the unexpected challenges that can come with epilepsy, and how difficult it can sometimes be to accept those challenges as part of your reality.

But Emma also shows us that epilepsy is only one part of her story.

Despite living with epilepsy, Emma works as a physiotherapist in a hospital and is a Clinical Coordinator with the Australian Epilepsy Project. Her own experience with epilepsy has helped shape her passion for working in healthcare and supporting others.

And that’s exactly why we’re stepping for epilepsy.

Every step our AEP team takes is about more than walking. It’s about raising awareness, supporting people living with epilepsy, and helping create a future where people affected by epilepsy have better answers, better care and better outcomes.

Emma reminds us:

💜 “Yes, there are things that epilepsy may prevent me from doing, but I sure won’t let it stop me from living a full, fun life!”

So today, we’re stepping with Emma, with Amanda, and with everyone whose life has been impacted by epilepsy.

We’re excited to announce that the Australian Epilepsy Project will be supporting BOTH major walks for epilepsy fundraising this year! 🎉💜🙌

👟 First up: Step 4 Epilepsy!

Our team will be walking 26 minutes a day ⏱️🚶‍♀️ to raise awareness 📣 and vital funds 💰 for Epilepsy Action Australia.

🌸 Then in October: Walk for Epilepsy!

We’ll be taking part once again, with each team member walking 25km from 1–25 October 🗓️👟💜 to show our support for Australians impacted by epilepsy. This event is hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Australia💜👏
