π Getting Ready for Your NDIS Planning Meeting? π
Your NDIS planning or reassessment meeting is your chance to explain how your disability impacts your daily life and what supports you need to achieve your goals. Preparation can make a big difference!
β
Before the Meeting
Gather recent reports and evidence, such as:
β’ OT, psychology, speech pathology, physiotherapy, or specialist reports
β’ Functional assessments
β’ School, employment, or support provider reports
π‘ Remember: NDIS funding is based on your functional impact, not just your diagnosis.
Think about your "good days" and "bad days":
β’ Personal care
β’ Mobility
β’ Communication
β’ Fatigue
β’ Mental health
β’ Safety concerns
β’ Support needed from family or carers
π― Be clear about your goals, such as:
β’ Greater independence
β’ Employment or study
β’ Community participation
β’ Building social connections
β’ Improving daily living skills
β
During the Meeting
Be honest and specific.
Instead of saying:
β "I manage okay."
Try:
β
"I can do this task, but I need reminders, support, supervision, or experience significant fatigue."
Discuss:
β’ What you can do independently
β’ What you need help with
β’ What you cannot do safely
Don't forget to mention support from family and friends, including how often they help and whether it's sustainable.
Talk about all areas of impact:
β’ Mobility
β’ Communication
β’ Social interaction
β’ Learning
β’ Self-care
β’ Self-management
β Ask questions:
β’ Is additional evidence needed?
β’ How will my goals be reflected in my plan?
β’ Are there supports that could help me achieve my goals?
β
Bring Support If Needed
A support coordinator, advocate, family member, or trusted friend can help you remember key points, provide examples, take notes, and offer support during the meeting.
β οΈ Common Mistakes to Avoid
β Downplaying your challenges
β Focusing only on diagnosis
β Forgetting to mention informal supports
β Using outdated reports
β Not explaining why current funding isn't meeting your needs
