Comment "sensory" ✨ your sensory seeker will thank you!

If you have a sensory seeking toddler or preschooler you've probably heard all about 'regulation' and how important the proprioceptive sensory system is... But what you HAVEN'T probably heard about is how to effectively use squeezes + rhythms to intentionally coordinate multiple sensory systems!!

In short, a connected and coordinated system is grounded, in control, and able to meet the demands of the input from its environment. That means CONNECTED GROUNDED BRAINS that can actually cope with the world...

And we all need a little help coping in this world, am I right? 🫠

I've been writing more sensory songs to help my families practise this input in an enjoyable and accessible way - here's one I wrote recently πŸ™πŸ’ž I love hearing how people find them!! Please tell me 🀣

The real magic is the music itself 🧹✨ I made this little adaptation to help with transitions in the morning but the idea is just change the lyrics to literally any 'thing' they need to bring to school or preschool or whatever!

As part of the Halloween song series, here's five more songs that pack a punch for child development for any neurotype πŸ‘‡

πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ "Skulls, Monsters Ghosts and Ghouls" (tune of heads shoulders knees and toes- see linked reels)
πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ "There's a spider on the floor" - Raffi
πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ "Monster in my garden" - Helen Shoemak
πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ "Creatures start to creep" - Sierra Verity-Beasley (see my linked reels!)
πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ "Big Hairy Huntsman" (to the tune of incy Windy spider - see linked reels)

enjoy xxπŸ‘»

I can't stop and I won't stop advocating for families and kids to get access to the therapies they actually want and need. πŸ’ͺ

If you feel like music and or creative therapies have helped you or someone you know, please don't hesitate to make that known, comment below or speak up (in any space, but particularly when it comes to disability funding opportunities), we have to keep on reminding leaders what we value and what we'll accept.

I know amongst all the cuts and changes happening now, there are bigger problems in our funding system -big love to anyone who feels confused and worried right now. For me, I had to share what was on my heart xx

Don't mistake overstimulation for disinterest in music time! 🫣 Often it's the things that are most exciting that become the more difficult things to process (physiologically) - but instead of removing kids with sensory processing differences from the group environment how about we try to make the environment a little easier for them?!

Here's a few simple things to think about when modifying how you're introducing music time to your group of kids (or even your one kid at home!!)πŸ€“I could have gone on for way longer but there's only so many words I can fit into a post...

πŸ’•I want to hear from you!!!I know this community is full of creative solutions!!

What's your top tip for helping your kiddos regulate in music time? πŸ‘‡

πŸ’•Music+GLPs belong together πŸ’• As a music therapist I see the number one mistake people make is thinking their GLP kiddo is singing for fun and entertainment and in doing so missing EVERYTHING ELSE their brain is doing 😭

Once we understand the truth about how music impacts growing brains we can use music intentionally to support them wherever they are on their journey 🌈

The key take aways are:
✨ Recognize all communication is valid and meaningful
✨ Using singing to teach kids language is the BEST way to ensure it's engrained in memory
✨ Music has a double-bonus of being calming to kiddos who have difficulty with sensory integration, but recognize that using music for regulation is applied differently for learning!

So if you're keen to get more intentional music for kids check out my ⛓️‍πŸ’₯ songbook designed to help kids of all neurotypes...it's completely πŸ†“ πŸ’•!
