Plagiocephaly & Torticollis: Understanding the Connection 🤔

Let's break down these two common infant conditions that often go hand in hand:

Plagiocephaly:
👶🏻 A flattening of the back/ side of one side of baby's head
👶🏻 Prominence of the forehead on the same side
👶🏻 Uneven ear position with the ear moving forward on the affected side
👶🏻 May also include facial asymmetry
👶🏻 Common after spending lots of time in one position

Torticollis:
👶🏻 A tightness of neck muscles on one side
👶🏻 Causes head to tilt to one side and rotate to the other
👶🏻 Can limit baby's ability to turn their head
👶🏻 Often present from birth
👶🏻 May present as difficulty with breastfeeding on one side

The Connection: When a baby has torticollis, they tend to favour turning their head one way. This preference can lead to plagiocephaly as they're constantly putting pressure on the same spot.

👶🏻 Does your baby prefer one side during breastfeeding? 🤱🏻

Babies with torticollis have a preference with their head turned to a particular side. However, you might also notice they seem to prefer one breast during feeding. 👶🏽
