The recent 2026 Australian Residue Report has certainly been a hot topic.
The alarming issue surrounding pesticide use & PFAS (forever chemicals) on our fresh produce at major food suppliers such as Woolworths, Coles & Aldi has been quite distressing for the majority!
This information as sinister as it is, unfortunately is not new.
Chemicals have been used (through enforcement) for centuries.
Who is responsible for this ever growing issue & how can we take action as consumers?
The regulators earn 88% of its income from the very industry that it regulates.
Supermarket giants; Coles, Woolworths & ALDI all test their produce however no one publishes the results. They blame farmers, however who sets the rules & creates the incentive structures that our farmers are forced to operate under?
The supermarket giants account for about 2/3 of supermarket grocery sales.
The competition watchdog found they appear to be among the world’s most profitable supermarkets.
Farmers who work with them are expected to supply perfect, blemish-free produce, on extremely razor thin margins all year round.
This is where consumers really need to step up & take control over what they are purchasing & consuming as this global epidemic is on the rise.
It’s ludicrous to suggest that one stops eating fresh fruit & vegetables, as our very existence relies upon its very consumption.
What You Can Do?
You have the power to change how large supermarkets behave by taking your weekly grocery dollars elsewhere.
• Know your food & drive the change.
• Redirect some of your weekly grocery budget to your local supply chain.
• Head to farmers market & get to know the people who grow your food.
Ask them questions about it. Make sure they know you care about where your produce comes from & how it’s handled.
• Buy Organic - Fresh & Frozen.
• Start growing your own produce.
