This week, we had the pleasure of visiting Andale School, our 2025 fundraising recipient, to see first-hand the impact of our community’s generosity.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Andale has recently installed a brand-new jungle gym at their Kew campus. The Andale team shared just how popular it has become, with students eager to use it every day! In fact, it’s been such a hit that they’ve introduced a four-student-at-a-time limit to ensure everyone gets a turn.

Principal Rachel explained that the new playground provides students with a fantastic opportunity to regulate, stay active, and engage in creative play during recess.

A huge thank you to Andale for welcoming us and showing us the difference our fundraising efforts have made. And an even bigger thank you to the amazing Activate community for supporting another wonderful local school.

It’s incredible to see the positive impact your generosity can have within our community. Thank you again for helping make projects like this possible. 💙

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Back Pain: Active vs Passive Treatment

Back pain affects almost everyone at some point. In fact, it's one of the most common reasons people seek healthcare.

In this episode of The Activate Edge Podcast, we break down a meta-analysis involving 2,768 people with chronic low back pain that compared:

✅ Active treatment (exercise, movement, self-management)
✅ Passive treatment (massage, taping, manual therapy, electrotherapy)
✅ A combination of both

The findings were interesting: people who took an active role in their rehabilitation experienced better outcomes for pain and disability than those receiving passive treatments alone.

We discuss:
🔹 What "active" and "passive" treatment actually mean
🔹 Why movement remains one of the most effective tools for back pain
🔹 When passive treatments may still be useful
🔹 The limitations of the research
🔹 How we assess and manage back pain in the clinic
🔹 Why back pain is often more complex than what shows up on a scan

In April, the speech team were lucky to have Speech Pathologist and NeuroFlourish practice owner Linda Baker and her team speak to us about all things ADHD.

Linda has lived experience and was able to share her immense knowledge as well as provide thoughtful insights when supporting our ADHDer clients and their families.

The workshop allowed the team to learn more about the growing research around ADHD especially in girls and non-binary individuals, the impact of ADHD in academic achievement and practical tips to support our ADHDer clients by incorporating in particular their interests and movement in sessions.

It was great to hear that many of the tips Linda shared we are already using in our sessions and we are excited to put into practice what we have learnt.

Happy 1 year work anniversary to Shabina!

It’s hard to believe how quickly the last 12 months have gone. Since joining the team, Shabina has put in a mountain of work to get our OT program up and running. She has worked tirelessly behind the scenes creating everything that goes into building a successful program and a lot of that work often goes unseen.

On top of that, the energy and care Shabina brings into every client session has been amazing to see. As a leader within the team, she has also been a sounding board for her colleagues, always providing insight, support, and guidance in the way we all lead and grow together.

We’re incredibly grateful for everything you’ve brought to the team this past year, Shabina.

Last week we were lucky enough to welcome Justin from the Global Fitness Institute to Activate, where he put our EPs through their paces with an awesome boxing session

Boxing is a fun, engaging way to build cardiovascular fitness, upper body strength, and power. It’s also a fantastic option for those who may need to reduce lower body loading, making it an accessible and versatile training tool for people across the lifespan.

Big thanks to Justin for sharing his expertise with the team!

Quarterly team social done right!

We headed to the Fitzroy Bowls Club for a few games of lawn bowls… and quickly realised it’s harder than it looks

Despite the rain trying to ruin the plan, we managed to get a couple of games in, followed by a BBQ, some drinks in the sun (when it finally came out), and a few very questionable games of pool.

Safe to say, we’re better clinicians than bowlers.

Always great to step away from the clinic, spend time together, and build the kind of connection that carries back into the way we work as a team.

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have in managing Parkinson’s Disease.

Ivan is 56 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson's 15 years ago. Under the guidance of our Exercise Physiologist, Aislinn he has been putting in the work with targeted, high-effort exercise designed to support his movement, strength and overall function

For people living with Parkinson’s, exercise can:
✔️ Improve both motor and non-motor symptoms
✔️ Support better movement, balance and coordination
✔️ Play a role in slowing disease progression

At Activate, sessions are individualised based on each person’s presentation, using approaches that focus on:
🔹 Recalibrating movement (amplitude, scale and symmetry)
🔹 High-effort, high-output training to drive neurological change
🔹 Agility, balance and falls prevention

Ivan is a great example of what consistent, targeted exercise can achieve.
