Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to ACHIEVE and/or MAINTAIN an er****on that allows sexual activity with pe*******on. ⁣
⁣
ED is not a disease. It is a SYMPTOM OF SOME OTHER PROBLEM, either PHYSICAL or PSYCHOLOGICAL or a mixture of BOTH.⁣
⁣
ED is VERY COMMON and becomes more common as men age. An Australian survey showed that AT LEAST 1 IN 5 MEN OVER THE AGE OF 40 has erectile problems and about 1 IN 10 MEN ARE COMPLETELY UNABLE TO HAVE ERECTIONS.⁣
⁣
There are both PHYSICAL and/or PSYCHOLOGICAL causes of ED. Sometimes, there is no clear reason for erectile dysfunction. ⁣
⁣
Below are some of the possible causes of ED as listed in healthymale.org.au (previously known as Andrology Australia):⁣
⁣
* Psychosocial problems, eg. PERFORMANCE ANXIETY, STRESS, DEPRESSION, RELATIONSHIP ISSUES⁣
* NARROWING OF THE ARTERIES causing reduced blood flow⁣
* PELVIC TRAUMA and PEYRONIE’S DISEASE (a condition where a hardened lump/scar tissue in an area of the p***s prevents the p***s from stretching)⁣
* DRUGS, ALCOHOL and CERTAIN MEDICATIONS⁣
* INTERFERENCE WITH NERVE FUNCTION caused by SPINAL CORD TRAUMA, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE⁣
* Problems with BLOOD VESSEL FUNCTION, including DIABETES, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, HIGH CHOLESTEROL, SMOKING, and SLEEP APNOEA⁣
* HYPOGONADISM, such as Klinefelter Syndrome, which is a condition where the te**es are not able to make enough testosterone or sperm⁣
* Additional problems that can cause erectile dysfunction include THYROID DISEASE, GROWTH HORMONE CONDITIONS, and CORTISOL EXCESS⁣
⁣
ED can be a SYMPTOM OF AN UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITION. ⁣
⁣
If you think you may have ED, see your doctor for further assessment and advice on how you can manage your symptoms. ⁣
