"My jaw clicks - does that mean something is seriously wrong?" 😬

We get asked this ALL the time. Let's clear it up.

❌The myth: jaw clicking = TMJ disorder = serious problem.

✅ The fact: jaw clicking is extremely common and often completely harmless. Many people click with zero pain and no long-term issues.

What's actually happening? A small disc in your jaw joint slips slightly as you open your mouth. Think of it like a knee clicking - not automatically a red flag.

When SHOULD you pay attention? Clicking combined with any of these is worth getting checked: ⚡ Pain 🔒 Locking or catching 😮 Limited opening 🤕 Headaches or jaw fatigue

These signs may point to Jaw Joint Dysfunction (TMD), something we assess and treat every day.

Clicking alone? Usually fine. Clicking + symptoms? Worth getting on top of early.

Your jaw is trying to tell you something.

Forward head posture, stress, hard foods - they all quietly load up your jaw joint without you even realising. The good news? Small daily habits make a big difference.

Here are 5 things you can start doing today to protect your jaw health:

✔️ Check your neck - jaw pain and neck tension are best friends (not the good kind)
✔️ Watch your posture - your phone habit might be effecting your jaw
✔️ Avoid clenching - your teeth should not be together when you are at rest
✔️ Limit hard foods when your jaw is irritated
✔️ Relax your jaw at rest - teeth apart, lips together

Save this post and share it with someone who's always rubbing their jaw. 💜

Woke up and your jaw won't open properly? That's called trismus and it's more common than you think.

Trismus (or "locked jaw") happens when muscle tightness, joint dysfunction, or inflammation restricts your mouth from opening fully. Eating, talking, even yawning can become painful or impossible.

Here's what to do immediately:

🥣 Stick to soft foods

🌡️ Apply moist heat

⚠️ Avoid movements that trigger pain

Here's the most important thing to know: if your jaw has been locked for less than six weeks, your chances of a full recovery are excellent, especially with early treatment. The sooner you act, the fewer sessions you'll need.

At My Jaw Physio, we have expertise in exactly this; hands-on manual therapy, customised exercise programs, and real education so you understand what's happening in your body.

Don't wait it out. Your jaw will thank you. 🙏

Does your jaw click when you open your mouth?
You’re not alone — and in many cases, it’s completely harmless.

That clicking sound is often caused by a small disc inside the jaw joint moving slightly out of sync. It can sound worrying, but it doesn’t automatically mean there’s damage.

However, it’s worth getting advice if:
• The clicking is painful
• Your jaw feels like it catches or locks
• You can’t open fully
• You’re getting headaches, ear pain or neck discomfort as well

We’ve written a short blog explaining what’s happening in the joint and when you should seek help.

You can read it here:

Poor posture and desk setup can contribute to headaches and jaw pain. Here are some guidelines to help correct your posture whilst sitting:

• Sit with a tall upright posture.

• Remove arm rests that prevent your ability to tuck in under the desk.

• The top of the monitor should be at eye level.
• Knees bent to a 90° angle.

• Keep your elbows bent at a 90° angle.

• Whilst using the mouse your elbow needs to stay tucked into your body.

• Remember to take breaks.

Jaw pain rarely stays “just” in the jaw. Because the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is so closely linked to the muscles of your face, head, and neck, symptoms can often be surprising.
Are you experiencing any of these common signs?
• Jaw & Facial Pain: Persistent aching or sharp pain in the cheek area.
• Clicking or Popping: Noticeable sounds when you eat, speak, or yawn.
• Headaches: Tension-type headaches that feel like a tight band around your head.
• Limited Movement: Feeling like your jaw is “stuck,” stiff, or unable to open fully.
• Ear Pain & Congestion: A clogged feeling or ache in the ear, even when there’s no infection.
At My Jaw Physio, we specialise exclusively in these conditions.
➡️ Don’t ignore the signs. Book a specialised assessment today to find the root cause of your discomfort.
