Why is a regular breath practice (pranayama) beneficial? Numerous reasons :

* Decreases stress and anxiety
* Lowers heart rate
* Balances nervous system
* Reduces ‘fight / flight’ mode and stimulates ‘rest / recovery / digest’
* Helps to manage chronic pain
* Decreases fatigue
* Decreases muscle tension
* Improve focus
* Assist better sleep
* Stimulate the vagus nerve* more about this later

As a pelvic health physio, breathing properly to help assist pelvic floor muscle function + specific breath exercises is a very important tool and part of my practice. It can help those suffering from constipation, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, pain with intimacy and erectile dysfunction in men.

And of course, prenatally and during childbirth. 🤰

Breath exercises have been well established as a useful tool to strengthen the mind-body connection

Try this easy relaxed breathing exercise anytime of the day - I suggest first thing in the morning when you wake up and last thing at night, starting for 2 mins in a comfortable position to help set you up and wind you down for the day; try it for a month and see if you can automate it into your self care routine.

*more on the vagus nerve and why it is so important for health and well-being soon!

“Family is an endless cycle of love, frustration, forgiveness. Love, frustration, forgiveness...”
- Dr. Arne Rubinstein on Rites of Passage, Dumbo Feather Podcast.

Here, just love.

Highly recommend the above podcast if you have children, if you don’t have children, if you are human.

What are the 5 things happening in this photo that are helping to stimulate those natural ‘feel good’ hormones?
🧠 🥬 ☀️ 🌳🥰

In honour of National Pain Week, the above suggestions are a few ‘biohacks’ to release those feel good hormones (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins) that help you heal, live and feel better.

acknowledges those that live with on the daily and highlights increasing knowledge and understanding in this area. Pelvic health physios are well versed in helping to treat and manage many chronic pelvic pain conditions including , painful bladder syndrome and .

There are of course specific pelvic floor and musculoskeletal treatments and exercises that we can do to help the above conditions. But these are only a few of the tools 🛠 at our disposal and the reality is different tools will work better for different people (treating chronic pain is treating the whole person - the biopsychosocial 🧪 🧠🤝approach).

Trying to stimulate the brain and body to release more of our naturally occurring feel good hormones and opioids (ie. painkillers), is just one ‘tool’ in the toolbox that is chronic pain management. As you can see it’s not 🚀 science...but sometimes the simplest things can be the most effective when done right.

Oh, and as for what’s happening in the photo:
Dopamine release (reward hormone) through growing own veges and eating natural foods 🥬
Serotonin (mood stabiliser) by being in nature and getting some ☀️
Oxytocin (💕) by playing with 👶🏻
