On Friday 13 November, La Vita Care is bringing together lived experience, accessible housing, allied health and disability support for our first Compass Event: Strengthening Independence.

Hear from Katie Jeffery, sports player and Carlton fan; Tom Worsnop, SDA and accessible housing specialist; and Alex McIntosh, Senior Physiotherapist at NeuroRehab Allied Health Network — in a conversation facilitated by La Vita Care Founder and CEO Jonathan Edmonds. Plus an optional, practical physiotherapy session.

For people with disability, families and carers — and the professionals and organisations who support them.

For Luke, independence includes continuing to create.

After MS changed what he could do with his right hand, Luke learnt to paint with his left. Art became more than a pastime — it gave him a way to keep expressing the things he loves: nature, birds, family and the places that inspire him.

His weeks include art classes, galleries, music, time outdoors and days out with Michelle from the La Vita Care team.

As Luke puts it, sometimes painting lets you escape the things you can’t do physically — because you can still do them in your head.

Independence looks different for everyone - and it's a key part of what we do at La Vita Care.

Independence looks different for everyone.

For Luke, it can mean creating art and getting out to the places that inspire him.
For Tyler, it means choice, autonomy and pursuing his studies.
For Ray, it can be enjoying his home, his colourful courtyard and the people who stop by for a chat.
And sometimes, it looks like a weekly coffee that grows into genuine friendship and community.

Twenty years.

For two decades, BrainLink has been alongside people living with brain injury, their families and carers — providing information, support, connection, and a pathway through what can often feel like an overwhelming journey.

If you've ever been in that position, you'll know how much that matters. Someone picking up the phone and helping you understand what's happening. A connection to others who've been through something similar. The sense that you're not navigating it alone.

To mark the milestone, CEO Sharon Strugnell has reflected on the people, families, supporters and communities who have shaped BrainLink over those 20 years. It's worth a read.

That's how Paul Jamieson describes his own journey after a traumatic brain injury.

It's also a good description of what specialist support should be doing.

At La Vita Care, we look at the whole person — their health, their personal life, their home, and their community. Because rebuilding a life after brain injury isn't one thing. It's all of it, together.
