Apraxia of Speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder that affects a person’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speaking.
People with apraxia know what they want to say, but the brain has difficulty sending the correct instructions to the muscles involved in speech. This can result in speech that sounds inconsistent, words being produced differently each time, or increased effort when speaking.
Apraxia of Speech is often acquired following a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition affecting the areas of the brain responsible for speech planning.
