Melbourne has officially entered its freezing era, and somehow that doesn't exempt me from my weekly rehab sessions. ❄️🥶
So there I was, rugged up in every layer I could find — scarf, beanie, gloves, leg warmers, thick socks — looking less like an athlete and more like a walking doona.
Part of my rehab involves walking without my trusty walking frame. For those who know me, you'll understand the visual: a slightly robotic-looking human wandering around with great determination and questionable elegance. 😂
As challenging (and sometimes monotonous) as these sessions can be, they're so important for maintaining my movement, balance, coordination and overall physical function. Getting outside in the fresh air is also incredibly good for my mindset.
Having my physio there makes a huge difference too. Not only do I feel safer, but I'm far more willing to take on things that push me out of my comfort zone. And if I'm honest, there's a level of accountability that stops me negotiating my way out of the harder exercises.
But in winter? It's doubly hard.
Thankfully, a hot coffee and banana afterwards go a long way towards restoring both body and soul. ☕🍌
The highlight of today's session came when my scarf started coming loose. I casually tried to flick it back into place and nearly flipped myself over in the process. One second I was adjusting my outfit, the next I was questioning my life choices.
I imagine supermodels strutting effortlessly down catwalks in sky-high stilettos, while I'm over here in sneakers, nearly airborne because of a rogue scarf. 🤣
It did get me thinking though. Sometimes it feels like we already have enough to contend with, but it's amazing how much easier things become when we add extra layers of support around ourselves.
Whether it's a physio, a friend, family, a walking frame, a coffee date, or someone who simply checks in — don't underestimate the power of wrapping yourself up in support.

I’ve been meaning to write a blog about what I'm grappling with at the moment "infections, screws and tear duct plugs" but I'm too tired.

The reality is that sometimes you’re so busy navigating a challenge that you don’t have the space to process it, let alone write about it. It’s one of those curious aspects of disability — being completely engulfed in managing something while simultaneously trying to make sense of it.

The stories are coming soon. I just needed a little distance from living it before I could write about it.

Hope too share this soon!

Watching this, you might just see someone swimming breaststroke. What I feel is something very different.
Even 20 years after my stroke, coordinating my arms, legs, breathing and balance all at once takes enormous concentration and effort. It's not automatic. It's work.
For years, swimming was something I practised regularly, so my body became more efficient at it. But after eye surgery, I couldn't swim for 2.5 years. The result? Skills I once found relatively manageable now leave me exhausted. These days, 50 metres of breaststroke can feel like a marathon.
It's a powerful reminder that we don't get better at things by avoiding them. We get better through exposure, repetition and practice.
Swimming has made me think: what is something in your own life that you could do more often to improve? A skill, a hobby, a conversation, an exercise, a challenge you've been putting off?
Progress isn't always about talent. Often, it's simply about showing up often enough for your brain and body to remember how.
The power of exposure is real. The things we practise become easier. The things we stop doing become harder.
So today, I'm back in the pool, one exhausting lap at a time. 🏊‍♀️

Rain, wheels, tangled leads and all. ☔🐾

There was a time when I worried I might never be able to walk my dog independently again. These days, I loop her lead over the arm of my walking frame and off we go.

Is it perfect? Not even close. The lead regularly finds its way into my wheel, and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve ended up sitting on the footpath untangling the mess while my watch and phone frantically decide I’ve had a fall. 😂

There are extra barriers too. Wet footpaths, balance challenges, and plenty of people who simply drive past without a second glance.

But moments like this remind me why it’s all worth it. The fresh air, the rain, my dog’s excitement, and the simple freedom of getting out together.

It’s amazing how something that seems so ordinary can be so important. Sometimes independence isn’t about doing things perfectly—it’s about finding a way to keep doing the things that matter. 💛🐶☔

Today I attended a NDIS education event where people gathered to work out how this upcoming proposed bill would impact the Disability community. It is beyond concerning. There is so much beyond our control but there are things that we all can do whether we are a participant of the scheme or not. The proposed changes will have devastating impacts on so many people's lives. Here's what we can ALL do-
