Sometimes the role of an End-of-Life Doula is simply being there.
Recently, I supported a client during an unexpected hospital visit. While the medical team focused on her care, my role was to focus on her.
I helped facilitate communication, ensured her wishes and needs were understood, provided companionship, and supported her desire to return home as soon as it was safe to do so.
We spent time talking, playing games, sharing stories, and even recording memories from her childhood to share with her family. What could have been a long and lonely event became an opportunity for connection, reminiscence and meaningful conversation.
People are often surprised to learn that End-of-Life Doulas can provide support in hospitals as well as at home. Sometimes that support looks like advocacy. Sometimes it looks like practical assistance. And sometimes it looks like simply sitting beside someone and listening to their stories.
A special thank you to the amazing hospital team who welcomed me as part of my client's support network and provided compassionate, person-centred care throughout her stay. Your kindness and professionalism were greatly appreciated.
What would make a difficult hospital stay feel more comfortable or meaningful for you or someone you love? 💜
