Our MiCBT research is being cited in the growing literature on interoceptive awareness and emotion regulation.
Interoceptive awareness is the capacity to notice internal body. Current research suggests that how we register sensations, and the meaning the mind constructs from them, plays a central role in how emotions are experienced and regulated.
MiCBT trains this capacity directly. Systematic body scanning develops precise attention to sensation, and learning to observe sensation without reacting to it reduces the automatic patterns, such as avoidance and rumination, that maintain anxiety and low mood.
Our 2022 randomised controlled trial, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, is among the studies now being referenced by researchers working in this area. It is encouraging to see this work contributing to the field's understanding of the body's role in emotional change.
