What is neuro-affirming behaviour support?
In the NDIS, behaviour support is evolving.
It is no longer about changing the person to fit the environment.
It is about understanding the person and adapting the support around them.
A neuro-affirming approach means:
💭 Recognising that different ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world are valid
👆🏽 Inderstanding the function behind behaviour
👩❤️👨 Spporting regulation instead of expecting compliance
☺️ Respecting autonomy, identity, and choice
This approach shifts the focus from:
“how do we stop this behaviour?”
to
“what does this person need, and how can we support them?”
When we work in this way, we move from managing behaviour to supporting quality of life.
