Moira Tobin - Duck's Back - move.grow.cook & Thermomix Move naturally, grow food and cook with me! Melbourne based 'zero waste' Thermomix Consultant. My philosophy is that exercise should not cost a fortune. Moira x

I have something in common with every one of you... a heart beat and only 168 hours a week to juggle family, work, household duties (cooking!) and exercise! Before having four children I worked behind the scenes at many of Australia’s major sporting and artistic events. My carefree weekends were spent training for marathons, triathlons and fun runs, or cycling through parts of our beautiful countr

y. Spare time was spent educating myself about the benefits of good nutrition. After having children my career change to qualify as a Personal Trainer was a natural one. As an eco fitness trainer I have discovered that nature is the perfect gymnasium. I’ve also found ways to incorporate exercise into my daily household routines. Having studied permaculture design, I am converting my suburban backyard into a productive food orchard. You are what you eat. My Thermomix certainly helps to feed a growing family healthy, nutritious food that they’ll enjoy eating and that won’t break the bank. I believe if you are armed with the right advice, a positive attitude, a willing (and able) body and have access to the great outdoors, you will discover infinite ways to exercise consciously and effectively whilst achieving sustainable results. No matter what title you hold or how busy you are... your path to health and wellness can become like “water off a duck’s back!”. Sharing the journey together.

A little celebration update that has taken (almost) 14 years to achieve…

I had zero plans in staying as a Consultant for more than a few months when I signed up with Thermomix in 2013.

With four kids under six I was exhausted from being a personal trainer. I had owned a Thermomix for 5 years and just wanted to learn how to use the Varoma so organised a demo. I was inspired! I told my Team Leader at the time not to expect too much, “I’ll aim for one sale a month”. I just wanted to learn and earn a bit of pocket money on the side.

Little did I know how that flippant decision would change my life and the lives of over 1,000 people. I know with every new owner I introduce there is more chance they will buy ingredients rather than preservative packed products. Wholefoods. Less packing

Singapore has been the reset I have needed.

I’ve spent at few days re-connecting with some of my favourite humans. My cup is never half empty but right now it’s overflowing.

Sincere thanks to those who have supported me or chosen me as your consultant - 1,000 times over. This journey would have been very lonely without you at my side.

Thank you also to Thermomix in Australia for all of these incredible opportunities. The champagne was delicious last night. Hic 🍾. Much appreciation.

My husband and I went for a walk at dusk last night.

On the way home he asked that question “what’s for dinner?”

I know, I know,. I should be asking him “what’s for dinner?” LOL.

We have both had one of those weeks.

I gave him two options, leftover roast lamb or soup.

He said I’d love one of those wrappy things with yoghurt etc”

A kebab?

Thermie to the rescue.

When we walked in the front door I searched ‘wrap’ on Cookidoo.

This recipe was the first one that I spotted: https://cookidoo.com.au/recipes/recipe/en-AU/r805185

I had all the ingredients and made 3 wraps within minutes. The rest was stored in a cup cake dispenser.

I added some pesto, grated pickles (recipe shared earlier this week), tomatoes, and parsley.

Said husband has recently had major shoulder surgery. For years he has been buying ‘wrappy things’.

Tonight when we were finishing off our soup for dinner (with freshly made wrappy things) I said, “please do not buy any more of those keto wraps”. These are just too easy to make.

Thanks THERMOfit With Noni for the recipe. I am loving all that you do from a distance.

If you search ‘nettle’ on Cookidoo (the Thermomix Recipe platform) only one recipe contains the ingredient ‘nettle’.

There are 115,230 recipes.

If you search ‘nettle’ on Google you will literally be bombarded with all of the health benefits of this incredible ‘free’ herb.

Nettle is growing (voluntarily) in my garden - a sign of healthy soil. I am not sure how she found her way into my patch.

You ‘should’ wear gloves when harvesting nettle because of the sting but I was reading recently that the sting is beneficial for arthritic fingers. Genetics would suggest that I’m likely to inherit arthritis so with this knowledge I’m choosing to feel the pain and harvest anyway.

Once washed you need to blanch nettle to remove the soil and sting (before consuming).

Want a Thermomix hack?

Use the egg boiling function (TM6 & TM7 only).

Add a litre of water. Add your nettle (snow peas, beans, edamame etc) and select soft.

The blades don’t move and your produce will be blanched to perfection.

Oh, and don’t throw away the water.

A cup (or two) of nettle tea anyone?

Making a pledge to collect one kilogram for every new Thermomix owner I introduce has grown into becoming a leader for 3147 Love Our Street.

It's almost our third birthday!

Every month we officially meet for one hour in postcode 3147 locations.

Wherever there is a litter hotspot.

Behind the scenes we do so much more.

Lifelong friendships have been formed.

We walk and talk trash often!

If this is your vibe why not join us?

Come for 10 minutes or 1 hour.

We always meet for coffee afterwards.

Together we can raise awareness, reduce our shopping behaviours and make a difference.

If you'd like something closer to you home please checkout Beach Patrol Australia (we are the same community organisation).

The litter on our streets ends up in local creeks and yOUR oceans.

Some people go out for a cup of coffee.

Me?

I go and collect coffee chaff - it would otherwise end up in landfill.

I use this chaff as a mulch in my garden. It’s much cheaper than purchasing lucern, pea straw or sugar cane.

Coffee chaff is the skin from the green coffee bean, it comes off in the roasting process.

Chaff is very light so it needs to be placed in protected garden areas or with just one gust of wind and it will disappear, which is ok. I know it ends up somewhere around my garden.

Because of this I also (mostly) use the chaff (carbon) to add layers in my compost bin with other free products I collect around my local community. These include used ground coffee beans, newspapers, cardboard, grass clippings, autumn leaves, cow & horse manure and organic food scraps. The chaff breaks down very quickly.

Many people say to me, “everything dies in my garden, I just don’t have a green thumb”.

Soil health is the most important thing when it comes to growing food or anything in the garden. Building a healthy compost pile might just be the solution.

What free waste resources do you collect in your hood?

PS The cans were also collected. These will be taken to the CDS in exchange for cash - 100% of which is either donated to Beach Patrol or used for other community projects. Love my supportive community.

I see red.

Both of these organic brands failed the test for their turmeric range in last night’s Four Corners episode - ‘Food fraud investigation reveals the disturbing truth behind the labels.’

I’m a bit devo.

Brand trust is everything, actually trust is everything. When broken it really is hard to rebuild (or is this just me?).

Am I really eating just cayenne pepper?

How will I ever really know?

What I do know is that I can grow my own.

I can dehydrate and blitz into a powder with my Thermomix.

We can be overwhelmed or, we can be inspired.

I know what I’m choosing.

Know what you eat.
Know your farmer.
Ask questions.
Slow down and cook from scratch.
Compost.
Grow more food.
In pots.
On balconies.
Even if it’s just one thing.
Max out our Thermomix usage.
Educate one person at a time.
Find the others.
