This certificate represents 3 years of hard study, sweat and tears!! The Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. The only College certified qualification in infertility, and three years of study culminating in a difficult set of exams. Followed by an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development. Yet only a small minority of doctors working in infertility have it. I am proud to be one of them.

Should you transfer one embryo or two during an IVF cycle? 🧬
In Episode 7 of The Fertility Place, Melbourne Fertility Specialist Dr Gareth Weston explores the clinical debate between Single Embryo Transfer (SET) and Double Embryo Transfer (DET).

In this episode, Dr Weston outlines:
- SET vs. DET: Understanding how single and double transfers differ in clinical practice.
- Success Rates: Why transferring two embryos at once does not simply double your overall chance of taking home a baby.
- Risks of Twin Pregnancies: The maternal and fetal health considerations associated with multiple pregnancies.
- Clinical Considerations: The specific scenarios where discussing a double transfer with your specialist may be appropriate.

Understanding the evidence behind transfer numbers helps you make informed, safe decisions alongside your medical team.

Saturday morning doing a transfer for my patients. This is a nice demonstration of adenomyosis, which in severe cases can reduce pregnancy rates if untreated, for example with hormonal treatment to shrink the uterus. It will make my year if we are successful with this transfer. Fingers crossed!!

Is a Day 5 blastocyst transfer always the best option, or can a Day 3 cleavage-stage transfer be just as clinically appropriate?
In Episode 6 of The Fertility Place, Melbourne Fertility Specialist Dr Gareth Weston explains the stages of embryo development and compares different transfer timing options.

In this episode, Dr Weston outlines:
- Embryo Stages: The biological differences between Day 2–3 (cleavage stage) and Day 5–6 (blastocyst) embryos.
- Pros & Cons: The advantages and clinical trade-offs of transferring at each developmental stage.
- Personalised Decisions: Why extended culture isn't a one-size-fits-all approach and how specialists tailor the decision to your specific cycle.

Understanding these stages helps bring clarity to your lab updates and equips you to discuss your options with your treating team.

What a wonderful evening celebrating a woman who has truly put her heart and soul into ivf over a 30 year career. It was standing room only at her private farewell. She has touched the lives of so many in the industry. Such a dreadful loss for that expertise to be lost. I will concentrate on the positives. Onwards and upwards Nicolette. You are not forgotten.

Today I am feeling nostalgic about the Sunshine IVf unit I founded in St Albans in 2008. For 18 years, our wonderful team has helped many dreams come true for our patients. We remain the only full service IVF clinic in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Our success I put down to three points: 1. Celebrating and respecting the wonderful kaleidoscope of cultures and religions of the patients who have made this part of Melbourne their home. 2. Consistent high quality patient focussed care. 3. Supporting and promoting some of the best clinical carers in the industry.
No fanfare. No flashy promotions. We just get the job done for the patients in the West. Thanks guys!!
