UNLOCKING HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS

I had a shocking time in high school.

And honestly, a huge part of the work I do now has grown out of wanting things to be different for kids like me.

I don’t want our kids to simply survive high school.

I want them to understand themselves. To know what helps them learn. To know that struggling with organisation, homework, friendships or getting through the school day doesn’t mean they’re failing.

I want them to know how to ask for help, and to have adults around them who know how to actually help.

Because high school asks a LOT of kids.

Suddenly you’ve gone from one classroom to multiple teachers, different rooms, timetables, lockers, homework, online platforms, assignments, changing friendships and an expectation that you’ll somehow become dramatically more independent over the summer holidays.

For kids who find executive functioning, communication, uncertainty, sensory environments or self-advocacy tricky, that can be a massive leap.

That’s why I created Unlocking High School Success.

It’s a fortnightly Term 4 program for kids heading into high school, but it’s not just for them. There are dedicated sessions for parents and carers too, because we shouldn’t be putting all the responsibility for making this transition work onto a 12-year-old.

We’ll talk about the practical stuff. Organisation. Homework. Learning at home. Asking for help. Advocating for yourself. IEPs. Support meetings. What to do when things aren’t working.

Not how to become the "perfect" high school student.

How to build a version of high school that actually works for you.

And because I really want families to be able to access this, we’re offering the program at our lowest ever price of $50 per session.

High school doesn’t have to be something our kids just get through.

Let’s help them go into it knowing themselves, knowing what they need, and knowing they deserve support when they need it.

School holidays are coming, and we have two BIG adventures planned at The Speech Tree!

LEGO MEGA METROPOLIS

Calling all builders, planners, designers and LEGO enthusiasts.

Over two big days, we’re creating our biggest LEGO city yet, with more than 33,000 studs of building area to transform.

Our builders will work together to create roads, buildings, neighbourhoods and everything else their metropolis needs. Along the way there will be plenty of opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, communication and negotiating some very important city planning decisions.

Monday 21 September and Wednesday 23 September
9:15am to 11:15am

INSIDE THE WILD: ZOOLOGIST FOR A DAY

For the kids who know an extraordinary amount about animals, reptiles and the natural world, this one is for you.

Reptile Encounters are coming to The Speech Tree!

Our young zoologists will get up close with some incredible animals while learning about their habitats, adaptations, behaviour and care.

We’ve designed this program to include genuine zoology and animal science to engage our older animal enthusiasts, while still being exciting and accessible for our younger wildlife lovers.

Monday 28 September
9:15am to 11:15am

At The Speech Tree, our holiday programs start with something children genuinely want to do. Communication, collaboration, flexibility and connection can then happen naturally around shared interests.

Program Announcement!

Getting ready for school is about so much more than knowing letters and numbers.

In Term 4, we're running a School Readiness Program with our Director Frances, designed to help your child head into Prep feeling as confident and ready as possible.

Sessions will run Monday and Thursday mornings (so hopefully one will suit your kinder schedule!), with a paired parent training session on Zoom in the evening so it fits around your family's routine and you're right there in the loop with what your child is learning. The parent sessions will cover important topics such as how to support your child in their learning and how to advocate for your child at school.

We'll be building the skills that matter most in those early school days, early literacy and numeracy foundations, along with the classroom and playground skills that help kids navigate the social side of school. The goal is simple: give your child a head start, so if there are any wobbles along the way, they've already got some of the all important prep skills down pat!

For upper primary & secondary students

Tonight, members of our leadership team are in attendance at the 'Facts, Myths and Questions Around the NDIS' information session hosted by Different Journeys.

With changes to the NDIS on the horizon, we're committed to staying across everything so we can support our families with clarity and confidence. 💙

A huge thank you to Kim Henderson for her tireless work and advocacy for the disability community — and to Different Journeys for hosting this important event. We're so grateful for the people in our community who make nights like this possible. It's an uncertain time, all we can do is wait and be ready to respond whendecisions the finally come through!

A special post today — straight from the words of a young person who joined us for work experience recently. 🌟
They've given us permission to share their story (with details changed to keep them anonymous). We think it's worth reading.
This student — let's call them Alex — has Autism and ADHD. For Alex, the idea of work experience felt daunting: a fast-paced environment, unfamiliar people, no structure they could rely on. So they made a thoughtful choice and requested to do their placement somewhere already familiar to them: The Speech Tree.
Over three days, Alex supported sessions with young children, helped with behind-the-scenes tasks like laminating, and on the final day was genuinely amazed by a group of bright, creative homeschooled kids.
"They were extremely innovative," Alex wrote. "They can come up with names for things that no normal person could think of in a lifetime."
By the end, Alex had also sat in on a clinical meeting — a real, meaningful part of the work we do every day.
What struck us most was Alex's self-awareness — knowing what kind of environment they needed, and advocating for it. That's a skill we admire in anyone, at any age.
