Vale Dr Tim Read

Melbourne Sexual Health Centre honours the memory of Dr Tim Read, a much-loved clinician, researcher and friend to many of us at MSHC.

Many of us knew Tim personally, and many more will know of the extraordinary contribution he made to sexual health, public health and public life. Before entering the Victorian Parliament, Tim was an important part of the MSHC community. He brought to our Centre a rare combination of candour, wisdom, humour and deep compassion. His care for clients and generosity towards colleagues enriched our workplace, and his influence remains with us.

Tim was an expert in sexual health, but also, perhaps more importantly, an expert in the things that matter. He cared deeply about evidence, fairness, prevention and improving people's lives. He understood the importance of looking beyond ourselves, caring for those around us, and using our gifts in the service of others. Those qualities carried through his career as a doctor, researcher and Member for Brunswick. His public-health advocacy contributed to reforms across areas including blood donation, drug harm reduction and to***co control.

Our thoughts are with Tim's family, friends and the many communities whose lives he touched. In mourning his loss, we also celebrate a life lived with purpose, generosity and profound commitment to others. We are grateful that Tim was part of the MSHC story, and the light he brought to this place will continue to guide and inspire us.

Tim will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.

Last month MSHC was proud to host a workshop for women Members of Parliament from across Victoria and the Pacific, including Fiji, Nauru, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and Bougainville.

Our Dr Mel shared an overview of MSHC’s services, along with a presentation on HIV, offering insight into how a health-based organisation in Australia operates. With HIV remaining a significant issue across the Pacific, delegates showed strong interest in learning more about our approach—particularly the work of The Green Room.

It was a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen regional connections, and support shared efforts in improving sexual health outcomes.

Yesterday, December 1st was World AIDS Day which began in 1988 to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.

World AIDS Day encourages awareness within our community and across the world reminding us that HIV is still a global epidemic

In Australia, an estimated 30,890 people are living with HIV. Worldwide that is approximately 40.8 million (2024). On December 1st we also honour all those who have lost their lives from AIDS-related illnesses.

The 2025 theme “No One Left Behind” calls for addressing inequities in HIV prevention and care by improving access and outcomes for First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities and those living in regional and remote areas.

There are now highly effective prevention and treatment options that support better health outcomes and significantly reduce transmission which include:

• HIV testing to support early diagnosis and timely care
• PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent HIV
• PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) for protection following a potential exposure
• Antiretroviral treatment, enabling people living with HIV to maintain their health and achieve U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)

📣 Important Announcement 📣

Starting December 2nd, MSHC will see people by appointment only, this means you'll need to book a time to see a clinician.

Clients will call MSHC first to speak with a sexual health nurse, the nurse will talk with you to understand your needs and help you receive the right care - this may be an appointment at MSHC or referral to another service that can help you sooner or closer to home.

If you arrive without an appointment, we might not be able to help you that day.

🟢 Please note: All services at The Green Room remain the same.🟢
