When a student is refusing a task, pushing harder isn’t always the answer.

What looks like “won’t” can sometimes be “can’t access it right now.”

The task may feel too hard.
They may be overwhelmed.
They may need more processing time.
They may be unsure where to start.
Or they may simply need the pressure reduced before they can re-engage.

Instead of repeating the demand, try getting curious:

What part feels hard?
What would make starting easier?
Would a choice help?
Can I use fewer words and give more time?

Reducing pressure doesn’t mean removing expectations. It can mean creating the conditions where the student is more able to access the skill.

Which one would you try first — 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Save this for the next difficult classroom moment, and send it to a teacher or support person who might find it useful.

The goal of the first week back doesn’t have to be doing everything straight away. 💚

Sometimes the most important goal is simply: school feels safe again.

Safety, connection and predictability come first. Learning can grow from there.

The first week back can use up the whole battery. 🔋💚

School asks for a lot; listening, learning, following instructions, managing transitions, navigating social situations, coping with sensory input and holding it together across the day.

So if home feels harder after school, it may not mean the day went badly. It may mean they used everything they had to get through it.

The after-school tears, withdrawal, irritability or need for extra support can be a sign of how much effort the day required.

Sometimes the best thing we can do after school is lower the demands, reconnect and give them space to recharge.

Look at what the day has cost them, not just how they behaved.

Same classroom. Same teacher. Same expectations.
But not always the same capacity. đź’š

A student can walk into school carrying a very different nervous system from one day to the next.

Maybe they slept poorly.
Maybe the morning was hard.
Maybe their sensory tolerance is lower.
Maybe social demands feel heavier.
Maybe their confidence has taken a hit.

So when something that was manageable yesterday feels impossible today, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re “choosing not to cope.”

Sometimes the most helpful question is:

“What might be different for them today?”

Curiosity changes the way we respond.
And understanding creates a much better place to begin.

A gentle reminder for the people who spend so much of their time caring for everyone else. đź’š

Your wellbeing matters too. Rest is not something you have to earn, and slowing down does not mean you are doing less.

Take the break. Protect your energy. Give yourself some of the care you so freely give to others.

Co-regulation doesn’t have to be complicated. 💚

Sometimes it looks like slowing your voice, using fewer words, lowering demands, staying nearby and giving the person time to settle.

Your calm doesn’t “fix” the feeling, it helps create the safety needed to move through it.

Keep it simple. Stay nearby. Lead with calm.

Sometimes “no” isn’t defiance, it’s information. 💚

It might mean:
This is too hard.
This is too much.
I’m not ready yet.

Instead of focusing only on getting compliance, it can help to ask what the person’s “no” might be communicating.

A different response can open the door to more support, more choice and a better chance of success.

Ask what the “no” is telling you.

Not every hard moment needs a solution. đź’š

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is a calm presence, safety, fewer words and the reassurance that they’re not facing the moment alone.

We can teach, reflect and problem-solve later.

When someone is overwhelmed, more correction usually means more pressure. đź’š

Sometimes the most helpful response is simpler: fewer words, fewer demands, a calm presence and time to regulate.

Teaching, reflecting and problem-solving can come later, when the person has the capacity to engage.

Regulate first. Teach later

You don’t have to create the perfect school holidays.
There is no perfect holiday schedule. No perfect outing. No requirement to make every day memorable. 💚 Sometimes what children need most is less pressure, familiar people, time to reset, and connection that doesn’t come with expectations. Sometimes being together is enough.
