Flashback to Tokyo discussing the treatment principles of “Kyo” (deficiency) and “Jitsu” (excess). My ankles had swollen to giant doughnuts in the damp weather, giving the appearance of excess. However, Taniuchi sensei categorised it as Kyo based on the fact that there was no pain or extreme suffering from the symptom. It’s a spectrum not an absolute but getting it right makes a big difference in how we choose to treat the condition.

W A T E R 💦 in East Asian Medicine, Winter corresponds to the element of Water 💧To embrace the seasons is to embrace life ~ “Water is fluid, soft, and yielding yet water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield…whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard.” ~ Tao Te Ching

This was Day 10 of COVID recovery: some gentle nature therapy, walking without raising my heart rate or sweating, sitting down often, having healthy snacks and lots of fluids, allowing the gentle sounds, beautiful scenery, sunlight and fresh air to work their magic. I am passionate about helping people recover from long and short COVID and am being diligent about taking my own medicine. It’s six weeks from the first symptoms to gradually return to full activity in my opinion, particularly when it comes to physical exercise. It’s frustrating but worth it.

Miura Lights in Kyoto is a family business that has been making traditional light fittings by hand since 1891. This craft has been passed down, hand to hand with a great amount of care. Rather than emphasising bright light, Miura models their work on the light of the moon, to express the beauty found in the space between light and shadow.
