This image displays a NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) GB auricular acupuncture chart, showing the 5-point protocol used to help individuals manage substance abuse, withdrawal symptoms, stress and emotional trauma.

Originally developed in the 1970s at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, New York, this therapy is designed to work alongside conventional addiction counselling and behavioural health treatments, and involves placing up to five sterile disposable needles into these specific points on the outer ear. The client then sits quietly in a group or individual setting for 30 to 45 minutes.

1. Sympathetic Point: Located on the upper ridge of the ear, this point assists with autonomic nervous system balance (fight or flight response) and relaxation.

2. Shen Men (Spirit Gate): Positioned in the upper depression, this point is commonly used to treat anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and pain.

3. Kidney Point: Situated along the inner ridge, this point is often associated with regulating metabolism, fluids, and reducing fear.

4. Liver Point: Located in the middle ridge, this point helps with blood flow regulation, anger management, and detoxification.

5. Lung Point: Found in the lower ear ridge, this point is used to support respiratory health, immune function, and grief processing.

Clients have reported: reduced cravings for drugs, alcohol, and ni****ne, minimised withdrawal and physical tension symptoms, an increased sense of relaxation and better sleep quality, and easier engagement in subsequent counselling and therapy.

Modifying movement for injury involves adjusting your exercise intensity, volume, range of motion, or tempo to avoid pain and further injury while maintaining your fitness. I constantly encourage students to keep training if injured by modifying a Tai Chi Form or Qi Gong sequence to suit their current ability, and now with my broken toe, it's my turn to teach by example and modify my movement.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the ear is viewed as a microsystem and often used to manage health issues of the entire body.
The centre of the earlobe, in particular, is the primary point for the eyes. Hence, why piercing the lobe and wearing a stud or hopped earring is thought to stimulate the acupoint and therefore improve our eyesight, more specifically, symptoms of eye strain and blurred vision.

As a side note, I pierced both my ears 42 years ago at aged 18, which for a male back then was both controversial and attracted intense derogatory aspersions, that thankfully, has become quite popular now even with young boys at my daughter's primary school.

"Reaching Tian (Heaven/Sky) to pick the golden peach" is believed to be the oldest Qi Gong practice that improves both physical and mental well-being, as observed by those who could reach high above to acquire food for their family/community.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, breathing in through your nose while reaching high above your shoulder to grasp an imaginary 'peach' (heels stay on the ground) activates the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians simultaneously. Balanced Kidney Qi helps to anchor the Lung Qi and assists with Lung Qi rebellion (cough, hiccups), and the grasping aspect while stretching the flank is crucial in promoting the smooth flow of qi in the body as tendons are governed by the Liver Qi and subsequently regulates all our emotions.

Perform it 3, 5, 7 or 9 times left and right (odd numbers aspire to Tian) with your tongue gently touching the roof of your mouth like you pronounce the letter 'L.'

16/03/2026

Hegu, known as Joining Valley, is a potent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupoint located on the dorsum of the hand, between the 1st and 2nd metacarpal bones, midway on the 2nd metacarpal bone on the radial side. It is classified as the Yuan-Source point of the Large Intestine Channel (LI-4), the Command Point of the head and face, and the 'Master Point of Pain.'

It can be either needled or massaged by applying finger and thumb pressure in a circular motion and is indicated for diseases of the head and face: i.e., external pathogenic headache and bodyache, dizziness, congestion, swelling and pain of the eye, nasosinusitis, nosebleed, toothache in the lower jaw, lockjaw, deafness, mumps, swelling of the face, facial paralysis, facial tic, swelling of the pharnyx and inability to speak. It is also used for aversion to cold, fever, febrile disease, anhidrosis (no sweating), hidrosis, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, labour/childbirth induction, gastric pain, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery, hemiplegia, finger spasm, pain in the arm, infantile convulsion, manic psychosis and irritability.
It is frequently used in conjunction with LIV-3 to activate 'The Four Gates' to strongly move the qi and blood in the body in order to remove stagnation and alleviate pain in conjunction with other acupoints.

Please note: Important Contraindication - LI-4 is strictly forbidden during pregnancy as it can induce labour or cause uterine contractions, potentially leading to miscarriage.
