🥑 Looking for an inflammageing-friendly lunch?

This simple, nourishing recipe is packed with ingredients that can support healthy ageing and help reduce inflammation – one of the key drivers of many chronic diseases as we get older.

But healthy ageing isn't just about what's on our plate. At Burnet, researchers are working to better understand inflammageing – the chronic, low-grade inflammation that can contribute to conditions like heart disease, diabetes and other age-related illnesses.

While you're trying this delicious lunch at home, you can also help fuel the research working to create healthier futures for all Australians.

Eating kiwi with the skin ON? 🥝

Burnet researcher Dr Raffi Gugasyan says it's a simple way to enjoy a snack packed with nutrients that play an important role in immune function and overall health.

But Raffi's work goes beyond what's on our plates. He and his team are investigating how lifestyle factors such as diet may influence inflammation over time, and what that could mean for healthy ageing and chronic disease.

Inflammation is a natural part of the body’s defence system, but when it doesn't fully switch off, it may affect how we age. This process is known as inflammageing.

Please donate today and help us understand how inflammation influences ageing. https://inflammageing-health.burnet.edu.au/

Better midwifery education means better outcomes for women and babies.

Through Pacific SMILE, Burnet and partners are helping midwifery students across the Pacific build confidence and clinical skills through hands-on simulation training in realistic maternity care settings.

Now running in 7 schools across Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Tonga and Kiribati, the program is helping strengthen locally led healthcare and support safer, more respectful care for women and newborns.

This work is part of Burnet’s broader commitment to strengthening midwifery education and supporting locally led systems of care.

Because every family deserves the best possible start. 💚🩵

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re highlighting 5 Indigenous methodologies helping shape research and practice across Burnet.

Indigenous methodologies are more than research tools—they are ways of understanding, relating to and working with the world that have sustained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for tens of thousands of years.

From creating space for yarning, to valuing lived experience as expertise, these methodologies challenge us to think differently about how knowledge is generated, shared and applied.

Indigenisation is more than inclusion—it requires us to rethink how knowledge is valued, how relationships are built and how research is conducted.

As Burnet marks 40 years, the need for rigorous, equity-focused health and medical research has never been greater.

Our 2025 Annual Report highlights a year of growing impact, including $103.3 million invested in improving health outcomes in Australia and globally.

Since 2020, that investment has grown year on year from $69 million, including an increase of 10% on 2024 alone.

At a time of funding pressures and global uncertainty, Burnet remains focused on what matters most: addressing the health challenges of our time and confronting the inequities that underpin them.

Big year for health equity tbh ✨

In 2025, we continued working toward a healthier, more equitable world.

This year, our teams worked across more than 70 countries, including Australia, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar and Vanuatu. We contributed to hundreds of research projects and global collaborations focused on improving health outcomes.

Our impact in 2025 included:
🧡 $103.3 million spent on improving health
🧡 212 research projects
🧡 292 international collaborations
🧡 Partnerships with universities, governments and hospitals worldwide

Thank you to our researchers, partners, supporters and communities who helped make this work possible.

Today, we at Burnet Institute acknowledge and reflect on Sorry Day, a day that recognises the profound and ongoing impacts experienced by members of the Stolen Generations, their Families and Communities.

It is a day of truth-telling, remembrance, and collective responsibility. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were and continue to be removed from their Families, the members of the Stolen Generations who continue to carry these experiences, and the strength of Culture, Kinship and Country that endures despite these harms.

Sorry Day reminds us that reconciliation is not symbolic — it requires listening, learning, accountability, and action.

We pay our deepest respects to members of the Stolen Generations, Elders, Families and Communities across the Country.

The arrival in Australia of former passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship after a hantavirus outbreak is a timely reminder of why pandemic preparedness matters.

Burnet Institute Chief Health Officer Associate Professor Suman Majumdar says the risk to the wider Australian community appears low, but events like this are important tests of our public health systems.

“The broader lesson is not that the public should be alarmed, but that preparedness is an ongoing responsibility,” Associate Professor Majumdar said.
