The Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation was established in 1992 to raise funds to support all forms of research and clinical activities of the Neurosciences at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. It has developed and expanded incrementally each year to be one of the leading organisations investigating the causes, complications, treatment and prevention of brain and spinal diseases. The main areas of fundraising are
• Brain tumour
• Acoustic Neuroma
• Spinal Tumours
• Stroke
• Aneurysms
• Epilepsy

Dementia is now Australia's leading cause of death. Yet research continues to uncover ways we may be able to reduce our risk and protect brain health throughout life.

Join us for our next Brain Food Lunch featuring Dr Oneil Bhalala, consultant neurologist and clinician-scientist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin Hospital and WEHI. Dr Bhalala is at the forefront of dementia research and care, with a focus on earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment approaches.

In this fascinating presentation, Dr Bhalala will explore the question:

"Dementia: How can you prevent it?"

Discover the latest research into dementia prevention, learn about modifiable risk factors, and gain insights into how advances in neuroscience are helping shape the future of dementia care.

At the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation, we are committed to funding world-leading research that improves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of brain disease. Because one conversation about prevention today could help change the future of dementia tomorrow.

Parkinson’s, Neurosurgery, Stem Cells, and the Annual Gala Ball – What do they have in common?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world.

The World Health Organisation estimates that around 10 million people are currently living with PD, with that number predicted to jump to 25 million by 2050. This means there’s never been a more urgent need for treatment and a cure.

That’s why the global research trial exPDite is generating such excitement. This groundbreaking study is investigating whether stem cell therapy can restore motor function, with the aim of stopping, and potentially reversing, the effects of PD.

Early this year, we performed our first neurosurgery to implant stem cells in the brain of a patient with PD. RMH is proud to be the second site outside of the U.S.A. to commence this promising research, with four procedures already established.

A/Prof Andrew Evans, Principal Investigator and RMH Head of Movement Disorders, will join Prof Kate Drummond at our upcoming Annual Gala Ball to discuss the potential of this pioneering research.

Book your tickets to the Ball and be part of the conversation.

🧠 Brain Food Lunch Series 🍽️

Thank you to everyone who attended and presented at our inaugural Brain Food Lunch.

Leading the discussion on Motor Neuron Disease (MND), RMH Neurologist and Fight MND grant recipient Dr Thanuja Dharmadasa joined lived experience advocate Josie Caruso for an insightful conversation.

Thank you to Sarah Matheson AM, Deputy Chair, for hosting the event and expertly facilitating audience questions.

With both newcomers and those more familiar with MND in attendance, the session provided clear insights into this degenerative disease and indicated the importance of connecting patients, carers, clinicians and researchers to drive better outcomes.

📅 SAVE THE DATE: Our next Brain Food Lunch will be held on Friday 4 December in Parkville, where we will explore the topic ‘Dementia: How can you prevent it?’.

We are delighted to welcome Josie Caruso to our Brain Food Lunch this Friday 24 July.

Josie’s mother, Vittoria, lived with motor neuron disease (MND) for just three years following a delayed diagnosis. Sadly, she passed away in November 2024 at the age of 73. Described as “fierce”, Vittoria continues to inspire Josie’s determination to advocate for and raise awareness of MND in her mother’s honour.

Drawing on her experience as an intensive carer for her mother, Josie will share the lived reality of MND, providing a powerful complement to the clinical and research perspectives being explored by Dr Thanuja Dharmadasa and the teams alongside her.

Ticket sales close Wednesday 22 July. Don’t miss out!
