Eastern Melbourne PHN is a Primary Health Network funded by the Australian Government to improve the care and support people receive from health services. We work in partnership to improve the way services are connected and to ensure they are easy to access when people need them most. We work closely with health professionals, consumers and carers to scope the gaps, identify emerging community nee

ds and purchase services that address these needs. We invest in a range of initiatives to make a difference in our priority areas including chronic disease, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, digital health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, immunisation and general practice support. We aim to improve the health of our community by ensuring people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. Our community of 1.6 million people live in Melbourne’s east and north east, from the inner-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, to the Yarra Valley in the east, and semi-rural communities as far north as Kinglake. www.emphn.org.au

RSV Awareness Week, running from 7 to 13 June, is a timely reminder that RSV can cause serious illness, particularly in infants, older adults and people with underlying health conditions.

The good news is that immunisation options are available to help protect those at risk.

Recent National Immunisation Program updates mean the RSV vaccine Arexvy is now free for eligible older adults, including:
- Adults aged 75 years and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

Infant protection options are also available, including immunisations for pregnant women and eligible infants.

With winter now here, consider discussing RSV risk and protection with patients who may be eligible or at higher risk, and checking whether your clinic has reminder systems in place for RSV and other antenatal vaccines.

Urgent care is when you need medical attention for an illness or injury that can’t wait for a regular appointment with a GP but doesn’t require a visit to hospital.

You don’t need an appointment or referral. You can walk in and wait to be seen by a highly trained doctor or nurse in a GP setting at no cost.

The month of June is recognised as Pride Month, a chance to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride and liberation.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue supporting healthcare systems that are inclusive, safe and equitable for the community.

As a PHN, we recognise the important role primary care plays in supporting people to access care that is timely, respectful and appropriate to their needs.

HealthPathways supports clinicians do this by providing evidence-based guidance and referral pathways that help connect patients with appropriate care.

The Private Lives survey is now open.

For more than 20 years, the Private Lives survey has helped build a national picture of LGBTIQA+ health and wellbeing, informing policy and improving services across Australia.

If you are 18+ and identify as LGBTIQA+, you are invited to take part in this anonymous survey and help shape more inclusive and responsive care.

The survey takes around 30 minutes and explores health, wellbeing and service access. Some topics may be sensitive, and participants can skip questions or access support at any time.

We encourage you to share the survey and promote it through your services and communities.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week, a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

This year’s theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is a shared responsibility. It belongs to all of us, every day, through how we listen, learn, connect and take action.

Health professionals across the east and north-east Melbourne catchment can acknowledge National Reconciliation Week by sharing resources, attending local events, starting meaningful conversations, and continuing to build culturally safe and respectful care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Congratulations to our Allied Health survey winner - Danielle Graber (Psychologist), winner of an Apple watch. These are her thoughts on the survey and what she hopes is achieved:
“I read about it in the Allied Health survey and thought, ‘thank God.’ For the first time in a decade, it felt like someone was actually paying attention to Allied Health Professionals."
“Greater advocacy and improved GP understanding of psychologists’ skills - particularly as assessors and intervention providers. Promoting this role, challenging misconceptions, and involving psychologists in training and program design will strengthen collaboration across care teams. Ultimately, this should support more integrated care, ease pressure on GPs, and lead to better, more holistic outcomes for patients.”
