MYTH: you need a GP referral to see an osteopath.

You don’t. Osteopaths are primary-contact practitioners in Australia, which means you can book straight in — no GP visit first, no waiting on a referral letter, no extra appointment fee just to be told to come and see us.
If you’ve got private health extras cover, you can claim on the spot with no referral at all.

There are two situations where a referral does matter: a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan (your GP decides if you’re eligible, and it covers up to five allied health visits a year), and some WorkCover or TAC claims. Worth asking your GP about if your issue has been hanging around.

Otherwise, if something’s sore or you want to improve your performance, just book. That’s the whole process.

MYTH: you should stop exercising until the pain is gone.
It’s the most common thing people do, and it’s usually the thing that drags recovery out.

Complete rest feels sensible — but tissue gets weaker quickly, you lose fitness, and the longer you avoid something the more threatening it feels to go back to. That’s how a three-week problem turns into a three-month one.

The better move is almost always to modify, not stop. Lighter weight. Shorter distance. A different range. Swap running for cycling for a fortnight. Keep doing something and keep the door open.

A rough guide people find useful: pain during activity that settles within 24 hours and isn’t getting worse week to week is usually okay to work with. Pain that climbs, lingers, or changes how you move needs a look.
Not sure where your line is? That’s exactly the conversation to have with us.

2. Bosch holds
A long lever isometric hold that asks the hamstring to produce force in the kind of position it works in when you run. Hold strong, stay still, no sagging through the hips.

3. Copenhagen plank
This one targets the adductors, which sit right next to the hamstrings at the pelvis. Strong adductors help share the load and keep the pelvis stable when you’re on one leg.

A few things to keep in mind:
✅ Mild discomfort during loading can be OK
✅ It should settle within 24 hours
❌ Sharp pain or symptoms that linger into the next day mean it’s too much, too soon

Tendons adapt slowly, so consistency over weeks matters more than any single session.

Save this for your next gym session and send it to a running mate who keeps grabbing their hamstring.

One week. Stay calm. Trust the work.

The hard part is already done. This week is logistics, sleep and patience; and three things worth getting right:

Carb load across two or three days, not one enormous pasta dinner on Saturday night. Ease off the fibre while you’re at it.

Friday night is the sleep that counts. Almost nobody sleeps the night before a marathon and it won’t hurt you; bank the good one two nights out and stop worrying about Saturday.

And on Sunday, start slower than feels right. You’ll feel amazing for 10km whatever pace you run. Bank nothing early. The marathon doesn’t start until 30km, so run the first half in a way that means you’re still there for it.

If a last-minute niggle turns up, call us first thing — we keep room in the diary for runners in race week.
