One of the most popular stories from our latest REGENERATE newsletter featured a landmark study published in Nature Aging and led by ARMI researchers Dr Macsue Jacques and Professor Nir Eynon.

The study found that ageing creates distinct molecular changes across multiple organs, with some areas of the body showing more age-related changes than others. It's a fascinating step forward in understanding how we age and why.

ARMI researchers have challenged the idea that human ageing is a steady, even decline. Instead, their analysis indicates the body’s ageing holds stable for years, then shifts sharply at specific points, including puberty, the mid-forties to fifties, and around age 70.

If ageing actually happens in sharp concentrated bursts rather than a linear decline, then an intervention, drug, lifestyle change or screening test may only work within a specific window before or during one of those shifts.

A drug tested across people of all ages without accounting for those shifts could appear to fail when the problem is simply timing. Read the full story via the link in the comments.

We're delighted to share that ARMI’s Dr Jan Manent has won the 2026 Australia and New Zealand Society for Cell and Developmental Biology (ANZSCDB) Image Award for his image revealing the developing nervous system and skeleton of a mouse embryo in remarkable 3D detail.

The award recognises outstanding research images that showcase the beauty, complexity and scientific value of cell and developmental biology.

Using advanced tissue clearing, which makes normally opaque biological tissue almost transparent, and light sheet microscopy, which images specimens layer by layer using a thin sheet of light, Dr Manent captured thousands of images and reconstructed them into a detailed 3D visualisation. The image highlights the developing nervous system (in cyan - Tubb3) and the developing skeleton (in yellow - Sox9).

Jan is a researcher fellow in the McGlinn Group, where he investigates the gene networks that drive growth and identity in the early embryo.

The award will be formally presented at the 2026 ComBio Conference in Sydney this September, but we couldn't wait to celebrate this achievement.

Big congratulations to Dr Macsue Jacques, a postdoctoral researcher in our Eynon Group, who's a finalist in the 2026 Australian Medical Research Institutes AAMRI Rising Star Award.
Macsue studies how and why we age. Her latest study mapped DNA methylation changes across 15,000 tissue samples from organs including the brain, heart, liver and skeletal muscle, and found that each organ ages in its own distinct way. The winner will be announced tomorrow night at the AAMRI Dinner at Parliament House, Canberra. Watch AAMRI's video below to hear more about her work, and wish her luck.

Another successful Open Day at Monash Clayton. It was ARMI’s first year engaging with student and families as part of this annual highlight on the Monash University calendar and it was a terrific experience.

Our AquaCore tours were booked out as we showcased the extraordinary research models, research leaders and infrastructure supporting our world-leading regenerative medicine pipelines.
