June 3 — The day one man changed the nation. Today, we honour Eddie Koiki Mabo — not just for the legal victory, but for his courage, persistence and deep love for his people and culture.

Mabo Day brings National Reconciliation Week to a close and marks the anniversary of the day in 1992 when Australia's High Court overturned the doctrine of terra nullius — the lie that this land belonged to no one before colonisation.

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner with a deep love of his people, culture and Country. He believed in standing up for what is right - and in doing so, created a powerful example of how we can shift policies and the stories that are told about them. 🖤💛❤️

The Australian Government is bringing in new and expanded youth mental health reforms, including headspace Plus and Youth Specialist Care Centres. Tandem’s counterpart at the national level, Mental Health Carers Australia, want to ensure the reforms recognise the importance of working closely with family, carers and supporters. They are seeking your input to shape their advocacy.

👉 Have your say. Take the survey and help shape youth mental health services that support young people and the people who care for them.
Contributions close 8 June.

Reconciliation is everyone’s business, and this week is an appropriate time to reflect on the huge amount of work we need to do to ensure our mental health system is culturally safe for all and provides respectful and inclusive practices that support the social and emotional wellbeing for all First Nations people.

The ongoing impacts of colonisation include high rates of poverty, housing insecurity and physical illness, alongside racism and generational trauma, and this means the mental health crisis has hit First Nations communities hard. More and more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are taking on caring roles as supporters, family members or kin – and interacting with the mental health system as a First Nations person has its own impacts and challenges.

Tandem is committed to improving these experiences and helping ensure lived experience and the perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are placed at the centre of system leadership and design.

Today is world Schizophrenia Awareness Day, and we’re taking the opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about a condition that is often misunderstood and misrepresented in popular culture.

Myths and misconceptions like these contribute to stigma and other harms to people with schizophrenia and their families, and it's so important to challenge them. And when people with schizophrenia have a strong support network, they are more likely to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

If you’re a family member, carer or supporter of someone with schizophrenia, you’re far from alone.

16/05/2026

Discrimination and abuse lead LGBTQIA+ people to experience significantly more mental health challenges than non-LGBTQIA+ people – yet they are also more likely to avoid using health services.

Where there’s higher levels of distress and mental health challenges, there's also likely to be higher rates of mental health caring.

It’s so important that services understand and respect the diversity of carers and care relationships, and ensure all carers get appropriate support, regardless of their sexuality or gender.

This year, Tandem is calling to put ALL mental health carers in the picture – including those in the LGBTIQA+ community.
