Join us to hear from Tina Cao, Service Manager for Partners in Wellbeing at Neami International, as she introduces the program and shares how it helps individuals, families, carers, and supporters.

Partners in Wellbeing is a free Victorian Government-funded phone support service for people experiencing psychosocial distress, mental health challenges, or increased life stressors. The service also provides wellbeing coaching, emotional support, and practical tools to help carers and supporters look after their own wellbeing.

We know many in the Tandem community are feeling heavy following the passage of the NDIS reforms through Federal Parliament earlier this week.

The debate has been harmful, and families, carers and supporters are feeling unheard and fearful about what's next.

When support is reduced, need doesn’t disappear. Instead, it shifts onto families, carers and supporters who are already overstretched - many of whom live with disability or chronic health conditions themselves.

If you would like to speak to someone, please reach to the Tandem Support and Referral Line from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday on 1800 314 325 or visit https://tandemcarers.org.au/p/Contents/Find-Support/Support-and-referral-line.aspx

Our advocacy doesn't end here. We hear the fear, anger and exhaustion in our community right now.

Tandem will continue to work with our community and partners to make the support needs and daily realities of people with psychosocial disability and the families, carers and supporters visible – and ensure they are addressed.

We continue to work with our national partners, including Mental Health Carers Australia (MHCA), to advocate for improvements to NDIS reforms. Find out more about MHCA at https://www.mentalhealthcarersaustralia.org.au/

“When he had a physical illness, people knew what to say. There were flowers, messages, support… But when it was mental illness, there was silence.”

Hayden has spent decades supporting people close to him through mental health challenges. For many of those years, he didn't see or identify himself as a 'carer' - especially not when he was a 19 year-old man. Today, too many mental health carers continue to go unseen and unsupported.

“We need to recognise the thousands of mental health carers quietly supporting the people they care for every day. By understanding the challenges they face and standing alongside them with practical support and empathy, we can remind carers that they are not alone," Hayden says.

As Victoria heads towards a state election, Tandem is calling on all parties and candidates to recognise and respond to the growing number of mental health carers - and fund the supports they need.

This International Youth Day, help us put young mental health carers in the picture.

While balancing school, work, friendships and their own wellbeing, young carers take on responsibilities that often go unseen. Their care, understanding and commitment make a profound difference in the lives of those they support.

Tandem is standing alongside Satellite Foundation and partners in the Make Young Carers Visible campaign, calling on Victoria’s next government to:

🟣 See them — better identify young carers and recognise the contribution they make

🟣 Hear them — ensure young carers have a voice in decisions that affect them

🟣 Support them — make sure young carers can access the right support, when and where they need it

As Pamela Mardones from the Foundation shares,

"Sometimes, we don’t know what is happening in a young carer’s life or what they may be dealing with behind the scenes. Having a better understanding of their circumstances could help us adjust our expectations around what they are able to do in their day-to-day lives.

Every mental health carer deserves to be recognised, represented and supported — including our youngest carers.

What do you wish people understood about being a mental health carer?

There’s no single picture of a mental health carer — and too many carers and their needs still go unseen. Help Victoria see the full picture.
