Endometriosis Awareness Month
Do you experience painful periods, pelvic pain, or have you been diagnosed with endometriosis?
You are not alone. Endometriosis affects many women and can significantly impact quality of life.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, endometriosis is not viewed as a condition affecting only one organ, but rather as a manifestation of systemic imbalance.
Common patterns seen in TCM may include blood stasis, Qi stagnation, cold accumulation, and dampness.
In Chinese medicine theory, pain often occurs when the normal circulation of Qi and blood becomes obstructed. In other words, where there is stagnation, there is pain.
This is why TCM treatments focus not only on relieving pain but also on restoring balance and improving the flow of Qi and blood throughout the body.
Two commonly used treatment approaches include:
• Acupuncture
Acupuncture may help regulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pelvic pain.
• Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM)
Chinese herbal formulas are prescribed according to individual pattern differentiation and aim to address both the root cause and the presenting symptoms.
Recent research has also supported these clinical observations.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that acupuncture led to clinically significant improvements in pelvic pain associated with endometriosis.
(Giese N, Kwon KK, Armour M., 2023)
Another 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis exploring Chinese herbal medicine for postoperative ovarian endometriotic cysts suggested that CHM may help reduce recurrence rates and improve pregnancy outcomes. (Ding D, Liu S, Liu F, et al, Published 2024)
Every person’s pattern is different. Individualised diagnosis and treatment are key in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
