As a former paramedic and mum, I’ve held a lot of sick little ones who clamp their mouth shut the second that syringe comes near them. And honestly? I don’t blame them.

But here’s a little trick that changed everything for me.

Pop the teat of a bottle into your baby’s mouth, let them start sucking, then syringe the medicine slowly into the teat as they go. They suck it down naturally, no fighting, no spitting it back at you.

Babies are wired to suck, so they take the medicine on instinct rather than tasting it sitting on their tongue.

Make sure you keep a medicine flowing through the teat the whole time and pop it out once the dose is done, so they’re not sucking in air.

This is why it is critical to know the signs of respiratory distress.
This baby is showing rib retractions which is a visible sign the little one is having difficulty breathing.

This occurs when the skin pulls in between or around the ribs with each breath, indicating that the baby is using extra muscles to breathe.

This can be a sign of respiratory distress, often seen in conditions like RSV or the flu.

When a baby struggles to breathe, their tiny bodies work harder, making these retractions noticeable.

Recognising rib retractions is crucial for parents, as it signals the need for prompt medical attention to ensure the baby receives the necessary care and support.

Nappies are designed to hold liquid.
But if that liquid is hot, it traps the heat against your little one’s skin in one of the most sensitive areas of their body. The burn doesn’t stop. It keeps getting deeper for every second the nappy stays on.

As a former paramedic, I saw burns like this time and time again.
And too often, they’d been treated the wrong way before we arrived.

These injuries can last a lifetime, skin grafts, permanent scarring.
Pain that lingers long after the day it happened.

If your little one is burned and their nappy is full of hot liquid, take it off straight away, unless it’s stuck to the skin. If any part is melted or stuck, leave it. Run cool water over the area for 20 minutes.

Burns like this happen fast and most happen at home, what you do in those first few minutes makes a difference.

There’s nothing scarier than when your child stops breathing 💔

Watch this incredible mum spring into action and save her little boy. She shared that her 11 month old went from gagging to choking in seconds. She reacted straight away and cleared his airway 👏

Knowing exactly what to do in a choking emergency is everything. We don’t want to give back blows to a child who is gagging but we absolutely need to step in the second they’re choking.

Remember this:
If retching, crying or coughing: KEEP HANDS OFF
If silent, panicked and unable to cry out: IT’S TIME TO HELP

This is exactly why we exist. I never want you to find yourself in a moment like this and not know what to do ❤️ Follow along for tips to keep your little one safe

I’ve shared a lot about why I started Tiny Hearts, but what I’ve never really said is why I think so many parents put off doing baby first aid.

When I was a paramedic, the part that always stayed with me was never the emergency itself, it was the parents standing at the door holding their child, with this look of complete helplessness. To them it felt like we’d taken hours to get there, when truly we’d rushed as fast as we possibly could.

And that’s the part most people don’t realise. Those minutes before help arrives feel like a lifetime, and in them you are the only one there.

That’s why Tiny Hearts exists. I’ve stood in front of those parents and watched what it does to someone to feel that powerless while they wait, and I don’t want another parent to ever live that moment with nothing to hold onto.

So here’s what I’ve come to believe. The reason so many of us put it off isn’t that we don’t care, it’s the opposite. Picturing your own child like that is unbearable, so we look away, because not booking it almost feels like keeping the bad thing further away. I understand that more than you know. But looking away doesn’t make the moment less likely, it just means you would meet it unprepared.

The course is the easy part. A few hours, online, less than most other baby items, and what it gives you is invaluable. The gift of knowing what to do in the minutes that matter most.
