This isn't selfish. It's survival. ๐ŸŒฟ

So many of us were raised to give. To care for everyone else first. To put our needs at the very bottom of a list we never finish.

And then we wonder why we're exhausted, resentful, and disconnected from ourselves. Champion Women Laura Connarty-Duncan said something in our conversation that stopped me:
"There is no one more important than you in this life. Even if you were raised to give back and look after others โ€” you have to look after yourself first. Because you can't do anything well unless you start with yourself."

Read that again.
Putting yourself first isn't a betrayal of the people you love. It's the only way you can truly show up for them.
You can't pour from an empty cup. You can't lead, mother, partner, or create from a nervous system stuck in survival.

I almost quit before I started.๐ŸŒฟ

When I was 29, paralysed with MS, I made a choice: understand why my body broke down, or accept I'd never be whole again. I chose the first path.

But as a female founder building Bend Like Bamboo while navigating chronic illness, I discovered something crucial: You can't build something sustainable if you don't believe in yourself first.

Everyone said it was menopause. It wasn't. ๐Ÿ’š

I was 24 when I was diagnosed with MS. ๐ŸŒฟ

29 when an attack left me paralysed.
And I was completely alone in it.

LISTENING is the #1 skill every entrepreneur needs to thriveโ€”and almost never practices

Ross Judd calls it the ultimate litmus test - Listening.

"If I had a dollar for everyone who's said 'I need to listen more to my family, to my team' - I'd be a lot better off."

We all know we should listen. We all say we're going to.
And then? We don't.

Here's what happens instead:
We wait for our turn to talk. We formulate responses while they're still speaking. We assume we know what they're going to say.

We're physically present but mentally elsewhere.

Ross's insight:
"Stop and really listen. Really understand what that person's saying. And you'll save yourself so much heartache, time, and stress."
Why?
Because you'll suddenly realise - oh, they're saying the same thing as me. They want the same thing. They're not trying to undermine me at all.

Most conflict comes from not listening.

Not because people want different things. Because we're not actually hearing each other.
This is foundation-level work

Listening isn't a soft skill. It's the skill that determines the quality of every relationship - professional and personal.

And it starts with regulating your own nervous system enough to actually be present.

When you're in survival mode, you can't listen. You're scanning for threats, formulating defences, protecting yourself.

Real listening requires a calm nervous system.

This dad noticed something everyone else missed ๐Ÿ‘€

Ross Judd was watching a little boy at preschool. Well behind in development. Barely talking.
Everyone was worried. But Ross noticed something different.
The way the child walked.

His heels barely touched the ground. He walked on his toes. His calves were tight.
Ross said to his wife: "Just tell his mum to massage his calves. It can't hurt."

Within a couple of months?
The boy was talking. More open. Becoming the child he should have been.

Here's the neuroscience:
Tight calves signal your nervous system: "I'm getting ready to run."
It's flight mode. Survival mode.

And you can't communicate clearly when you can't think clearly. When your body is constantly preparing to flee.

This is what most people miss:
We separate mind and body. We think talking is just about the brain.
But your physiology drives your psychology.

When your body is stuck in survival mode - tight muscles, shallow breathing, constant tension - your nervous system can't access the higher functions like communication, connection, learning.

Building strong foundations means understanding this:
You can't think your way out of a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight.
You have to address the body first.
