Which weight loss surgery is right for you?
At LapSurgery Australia, we offer the two major types of weight loss surgery: Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass.
Research comparing the two procedures over five years shows similar overall weight loss. However, for people with Type 2 diabetes or significant gastric reflux, Gastric Bypass may offer additional benefits.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your surgeon and their team will discuss the options, benefits and considerations with you, so you can make an informed decision about which procedure is most appropriate for you.

Who qualifies for weight loss surgery? 🤔
It’s not as simple as looking at a number on the scales.
Whether weight loss surgery is appropriate depends on a range of factors, including your BMI, existing health conditions, previous approaches to managing your weight, and your overall health and circumstances.
There are also different types of bariatric surgery, and the most appropriate option can vary from person to person.
In this video, our A/Prof Chrys explains the general criteria for considering weight loss surgery and why an individual assessment is so important.
If you're wondering whether bariatric surgery could be an option for you, speaking with a qualified bariatric team is a good place to start.

Why do we recommend a pre-surgery diet before weight loss surgeries?
Our surgeon Assoc. Prof. Chrys Hensman discusses the reasons we might use a diet to prepare for surgery including:
- To reduce the volume of the liver to make the surgery safer
- To get patients started on behaviour changes that they will continue after surgery.

"Can I have weight loss surgery if I haven't tried everything else?"

It's a question we hear a lot, and the answer may surprise you.

You don't necessarily need to have tried every diet, exercise program or weight loss medication before considering bariatric surgery.

The right treatment depends on your individual health, medical history, previous weight loss experiences and goals. For some people, surgery may be an appropriate treatment option earlier in their journey, while for others, non-surgical approaches may be recommended first.

In this video, our surgeon Dr Ara explains what is considered when deciding whether weight loss surgery is right for you.

If you're considering your options, a consultation with a bariatric surgeon can help you understand the treatments available, call us to book in.

Exercise does more than burn calories after bariatric surgery.

New research suggests that adding regular exercise after gastric bypass surgery may improve your metabolic health in ways that go beyond weight loss.
Women who completed a 6-month exercise program after surgery had greater improvements in:
✔️ Blood sugar levels
✔️ Insulin sensitivity
✔️ Triglycerides
✔️ HDL ("good") cholesterol

Researchers also found that exercise was linked to a healthier, more diverse gut microbiome. Interestingly, when these gut bacteria were transferred to mice, some of the metabolic benefits were also seen, suggesting the microbiome may play a role in how exercise supports health after bariatric surgery.

While surgery is a powerful tool, healthy habits like regular physical activity can help maximise its long-term benefits.
