A nervous system practice for your eyes | Wood element, Chinese medicine 🌿

Much of our day is spent with an active outward gaze. Taking in information, taking in data, making sense of it.

When your outer vision never rests, your inner vision cannot expand.

Let your eyes land on something green. Bring softness to your gaze. Allow your eyes to receive what they see.

Soften into receiving.

Save this for when you can’t see the way forward. The full 2-minute practice is in my latest post.

Wood Element, vision and the eyes in Chinese medicine 🌿

The way you see is the way you live.

Spring is Wood Element season, and Wood governs vision: what you see with your eyes, and what you can imagine in your mind’s eye.

Our vision is part of our unique identity. The way we take in the world, use what we see to make meaning, create stories, make choices. What we notice (and what we don’t).

Our vision is also the way we see what’s possible. It allows us to dream, to see beyond what is and imagine what could be. Inspiration is the most refined aspect of Wood, come to life, and it requires clarity of vision.

In Chinese medicine, the Wood Element channels, Liver and Gallbladder, both have a connection to the eyes.

From the moment we wake until our eyes close at bedtime, our outer vision is working: scanning, taking in data, making sense of it. When our outer vision never rests, our inner vision cannot expand.

So this spring, practise a soft gaze. Let your eyes land on something green: a tree, leaves, flowers, grass. Keep your gaze landed, without glancing around. Bring softness to your gaze, and set the intention of allowing your eyes to receive what they see.

Soften into receiving.

What might you see when your eyes stop scanning?

Save this for when you can’t see the way forward, and follow for more on how the Five Elements map your emotions, your body and the seasons.

The connection between your body and your emotions is something I see every single day in clinic.

Your body and your emotional world are not separate things.

What is stuck in one shows up in the other.

I work with both, because that is the place real healing happens.

This work comes from over 16 years experience working with people: supporting their bodies and their emotions together

If you’ve been looking for someone who works with both, you’ve found her. Follow along.

Saying yes when you meant no. Swallowing the irritation down. Putting that neutral face on.

Or: the harsh words out of your mouth before you know it, then it’s too late to call them back. The blow up coming out of nowhere.

Anger isn’t a bad emotion.

Like every emotion, it needs to rise and move through you. It needs space and freedom to be able to dissipate naturally. When it can’t, it’s gotta go somewhere.

Suppression. You were taught anger is unpalatable, unfeminine, sometimes unsafe to show. So you repress it. Instead of coming out, it gets stuck in your body: your neck, your shoulders, your jaw.

Expression. It bursts out in a way that feels beyond your control. Snappy, reactive, then the emotional fall-out afterwards: regret, guilt, shame.

Both. Bottling it up at work, then losing your s**t over something minor at home. That one is exhausting: tight jaw, stiff neck, the voice in your head replaying what you said.

Save this for the next time it happens.

Comment SUPPRESS, EXPRESS or BOTH and I’ll
send you three steps you can do tonight. I reply to each one 🌱

There is magic in the forest near where I live ✨

The Superb Lyrebird is one part of that

It weaves together the birdsong of other birds, and sometimes even other man-made sounds…

I’ve heard even one replicating the sound of a chainsaw

They have a reputation for being incredibly shy, so every time I encounter one I just stop and absorb their song

Time is nature is medicine for me

It restores my flow, enlivens my sense of wonder and bring my nervous system into perfect alignment, every time

Magic 🪄

5 signs you have an anger suppression problem:

1. Jaw tension and clenching

Biting back your words, swallowing your opinion. You’re editing yourself in the moment.

2. Neck and shoulder issues

You’re doing the stretches but the tightness won’t relent. You’re saying yes when your anger is screaming no.

3. Digestive issues: bowel movements alternating from loose stools to constipation

Holding back how you really feel weakens the gut. Sometimes things are moving and sometimes you can’t let go.

4. Insomnia between 1am-3am

You know what the time is without having to check the clock. Wide awake again, same as last night, mind whirring. You get stuck replaying the same conversation, thinking about what you should have said.

5. Cycle changes around ovulation and before the period

You’re aware you’re ovulating (and not in a good way). Twinges become more irritating and breast tenderness appears. PMS worsens: sharp words explode before you realise what’s happening, the mood drop feels so much heavier.

You can tuck it away, swallow it down, repress and suppress your anger.

But denying its existence won’t erase it from your body.

Comment ANGER and I’ll give you a simple way to release that stuck energy 💚
