Most people still think about muscle in terms of appearance or how much weight they can lift.

But strength may tell us something much more important.

A major review combining 42 studies and nearly 42,000 people diagnosed with cancer found that those with higher muscular strength or cardiovascular fitness had a 31–46% lower risk of dying from any cause compared with those at the lowest fitness levels.

That doesn’t mean strength caused the difference.

And it certainly doesn’t mean being stronger guarantees a better outcome after cancer.

But it does suggest that strength and fitness can be important predictors of survival.

That’s why muscle deserves to be thought of as more than something cosmetic.

It contributes to your physical reserve... helping you stay mobile, capable and better equipped to handle periods when your body is under greater stress.

So as you get older, don’t only ask:
“What do I weigh?”

Start asking:
“Am I maintaining muscle? Am I getting stronger?”

Because strength training can be about far more than appearance.

Save this as a reminder to keep investing in your strength.

That’s the kind of progress we love seeing.

Since joining 5th Element Wellness and training consistently, Anita says she’s added roughly 2kg of muscle, lost 3kg of fat and feels better than ever.

It’s a great reminder that progress isn’t always about chasing a lower number on the scales.

Building strength, improving body composition and feeling more capable can matter just as much.

If you’re looking for a supportive gym in Fitzroy North where your training is built around long-term progress, come and experience 5EW for yourself.

Walking daily? I’d add strength training next.

If you’re over 40 and walking is the exercise that fits around work and family, keep that habit.

It’s good for your heart and can help you clear your head after a busy day.

I’d also want you building strength for things like lifting a suitcase into the car or carrying the shopping comfortably.

Walking doesn’t adequately prepare your whole body for those demands.

Your muscles need resistance that challenges them.

I’d start with two full-body strength sessions each week, using exercises that suit your current ability.

That might include squatting to a chair, wall push-ups and resistance-band rows as part of your sessions.

The starting weight matters less than finding a challenge you can control.

Those last few repetitions should take effort while you can still perform the movement well.

When that becomes easier, gradually increase the resistance or progress the exercise.

At 5th Element Wellness, we help people over 40 find that starting point and learn how to train with confidence.

The aim is to keep you capable of doing the things you enjoy as you get older.

Save this for planning strength training alongside your walks.

“I’ll join a gym once I get a bit fitter.”

We hear this more often than you might think.

Especially from people in their 40s, 50s and 60s who haven't exercised properly in a while.

And on the surface, it makes perfect sense.

Walk a bit more.

Build some fitness.

Maybe lose a little confidence around how unfit you feel.

Then join the gym.

Except there’s a problem.

The starting line keeps moving.

A few weeks becomes a few months.

And you’re still waiting to feel “ready”.

But you shouldn't need to get fit before working with a good coach.

Getting you fitter is the point of the coaching.

If you haven't exercised for years…

If your knees aren't what they used to be…

If you're stiff…

Or you simply have no idea what you should be doing anymore…

You should be able to start from where your body is today.

A good trainer can understand your starting point, work around injuries or limitations, and gradually progress your training as you get stronger and more confident.

No keeping up with the fittest person in the room.

No proving yourself first.

No waiting until you're “fit enough”.

You don’t need to arrive fit.

You just need to arrive.

If you’re around Fitzroy North and you've been thinking about getting back into exercise, send us “START”.

We’ll have a chat about where you’re at, explain how we can help, and you can decide whether it feels right for you.
