Pregnant women with mental health issues and how In a study of pregnancy massage in depressed women, researchers found:

🀰🏽Increased levels of the "feel-good" hormones serotonin and dopamine
🀰🏽Decreased levels of cortisol, an indicator of stress
🀰🏽An overall improvement in mood

This is not just with depression, it can also help with other mental health issues during and after pregnancy.

Research has shown that, for the general population, massage has other potential benefits. It may relieve pain, or it may boost the immune system’s ability to fight off viruses and tumors.

WHAT ARE TRIGGER POINTS?

They are basically knots in your skeletal muscles that are associated with palpable nodules in the muscle fibre bands. Which are also a common cause of pain.

Compression of trigger points may elicit local tenderness, referred pain or local twitch response.

The local twitch response is not the same as a muscle spasm. This is because muscle spasms are referred to the entire muscle contracting whereas the local twitch response involves a small twitch but no contractions.

TYPES OF TRIGGER POINTS:

π€πœππ’π―πž 𝐭𝐫𝐒𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝗼𝐒𝐧𝐭:
Which actively refers pain either locally or to another location in the area of pain

π‹πšππžπ§π 𝐭𝐫𝐒𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝗼𝐒𝐧𝐭:
Which is one that exists, but doesn’t refer pain actively, but may do so when pressure or strain is applied to the muscle

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐒𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝗼𝐒𝐧𝐭:
Is one that has a pain referral pattern along the nerve pathway that activates a latent trigger point on the pathway.

π’πšππžπ₯π₯𝐒𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐒𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝗼𝐒𝐧𝐭:
Is one which is activated by a key trigger point.

With a successful trigger point release often this will resolve the satellite and return it from being active to latent or completely treated

Each muscle in your body has more than one trigger point. So this means that all trigger points should be released in order to get proper and effective pain relief in the area of complaint.

PREGNANCY TORSO STRETCH:

Gentle twisting poses, like the seated twist, are excellent for releasing any tension along the spine.

HOW TO DO:

* Start in a seated position with your spine straight and legs crossed.
* Bring your right hand behind you and your left hand across your body onto the opposite knee.
* Inhale, and lengthen your spine.
* Exhale, and gently begin to twist your body toward your right hand, looking over your back shoulder at the wall behind you.
* Hold this position for five to ten seconds.
* Inhale, and come back to the center.
* Repeat this stretch on the opposite side.
* Repeat the entire sequence two to three times.

Twists in pregnancy should be β€œopen,” away from your midline, not toward your midline. They should be gentle, with no overextension.

How to treat Pelvic girdle pain start home.

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) during pregnancy is a prevalent condition affecting approximately half of all pregnant women.

Massage can be extremely helpful to relieve the target muscle strains and spasm in the groin, buttock or back as well as help to lengthen all the other muscles around the pelvis to help your body adapt to the increasing weight of your baby down through your pelvis.

You ask how can I deal with this pain at home while in lockdown and not being able to get a massage to relieve it?

You will feel pain:

1. At the back of your pelvis (back of where you feel your hip bones - posterior iliac crest)
2. Down to your gluteal fold (bottom of your buttock cheek)
3. Around your Sacrum and Sacroiliac joint where we described above
4. Possibly referring down the back of your thigh
5. Possibly around the symphysis (p***c bone area) at the same time or this can occur separately

I have some tips for you to how to deal with it and self massage yourself.

* Using a spike ball and massage the gluteal area
* Gently massage you lower abdominal area and inner thighs
* Ice or heat packs
* Stretches

Always consult your massage therapist or any allied health profession on what you do and how you things.

Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair.

Cupping is usually put into two categories; wet and dry.

- Dry cupping involves the suction of the skin into the cup. With dry cupping it focuses on a reverse effect of trigger point therapy. It brings all the blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to the area that is currently cupped. This then allows the rest of the treatment more effective and easier with muscle treatments.

- Wet cupping has one extra step in which an incision is made, and blood is drawn from the suctioned area. This then allows the body to detox and remover the toxins in the body through blood secretion.

As a therapist I always and will always remind my clients especially after a session where I use cupping on them to get up slowly and to have water after the session. Reason being you may feel lightheaded or dizzy during your treatment. You may also experience sweating or nausea.

We all subconsciously breath, but have you ever sat with yourself and actually consciously breathe?

Majority of us are breathing wrong without realising.

When my clients come in and I come to massage them and I ask if they breath through the chest of abdomen, 98% of them tell me I don’t know.

Did you know shallow and chest breathing can be one of your contribution to your chest and neck pain?

This is WHY?

Typical chest breathing doesn't utilise primary breathing muscles as well as they should such as the diaphragm.

Chest breathing then uses secondary muscles such as the scalenes and serratus anterior which causes overuse, tightness and therefore neck pain! If the diaphragm isn't being properly used it becomes very tight.

Since the diaphragm is essential to intraabdominal pressure, tautness can affect everything from bloating, reflux, deep breathing needed during excersise ect.

Trigger points often develop in overused muscle tissues, especially if they are relatively oxygen starved (ischemic), as they would be when there is an upper-chest breathing pattern.

When you breath through you abdomen, this allows more oxygen to enter the body, therefore giving more oxygen in your muscles too.

This is where massage can also comes to play and advice from your massage therapist.

To all those who suffer from bursitis this is for you. Here are some self treatment you can do for yourself. I know how it feels because I myself suffer from shoulder bursitis myself.

To all those that are saying what on earth is this woman talking about, Bursitis is basically inflammation of the Bursa. When the bursa become irritated, inflamed, or infected, fluid buildup inside the sac can enlarge it, causing pain and increased friction β€” meaning mobility may be more difficult than usual.

The Bursa is a sac that protects the ligaments, tendons and joints.

WAYS TO SELF TREAT:

1. Ice therapy: So when it’s inflamed, best is to first do some ice therapy in the area. Do not apply ice directly to skinβ€”always used a cloth or towel between ice and your skin. Ice should not be left on for more than 15 minutes at a time.
2. Massage the surrounding muscles but never go directly on the pain area
3. Reduce excessive movements
4. If needed take anti inflammatory drugs
5. Avoid activities that make it worse

Where can you find bursae:

* Elbow
* Shoulder
* Hip or thigh
* Buttocks
* Knee
* Achilles tendon or heel

This stretch targets the large muscle directly below the back of the knee. Use a wall, railing, or chair to lean against.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Stand about arm's-length from the wall.
2. Lean forward and place both hands on the wall about shoulder-width apart.
3. Extend one foot (the side to be stretched) behind you with one heel on the ground, and the other foot closer to the wall.
4. Lean into the wall with your hips until you feel a stretch in the calf of the extended leg.
5. Hold this stretch for about 30 seconds, and then change sides.
6. For a deeper stretch, move your foot farther back.

This stretch is similar to the Achilles tendon and heel stretch. however, by keeping your knee straight, you focus the stretch on the calf rather than the Achilles tendon.
