15 simple habits to improve your health : Winter edition

Health doesn’t usually come from one miracle food, one supplement or one perfect workout. It’s built through the small choices we make every day.

Every habit in this Winter Challenge is supported by scientific research. Regular movement improves cardiovascular and metabolic health. Strength training helps maintain muscle and bone density. Eating more colourful vegetables and fibre supports your gut microbiome. Quality sleep is essential for immune function, hormone regulation and recovery. Time in nature, sunlight and meaningful social connection have all been shown to benefit both physical and mental wellbeing.

None of these habits are complicated. They don’t require expensive equipment or extreme routines. They’re simple because they’re designed to be sustainable.

Pick one, then another. By the end of 30 days, those small actions can add up to meaningful change.

Your brain is made of fat. The fats you eat matter.

People living with depression have been found to have around 22% lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acidscompared with people without depression, highlighting a consistent association between omega-3 status and mental health.

Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA, are essential components of brain cell membranes. They help:
• Support communication between brain cells
• Regulate inflammation in the brain
• Influence serotonin and dopamine signalling
• Maintain healthy neuronal structure and function

While omega-3s are not a replacement for appropriate medical treatment, research suggests they may play an important role in supporting brain health, especially in people with low omega-3 status. Several meta-analyses have found that EPA-rich omega-3 formulations may help reduce depressive symptoms when used appropriately, particularly as an adjunct to standard care.

At Forest Super Foods, our Phyto Omega-3 is derived from sustainably grown microalgae, providing a clean, ocean-friendly source of EPA without fish.

Your brain never stops rebuilding itself. Give it the building blocks it needs.

Did you know turmeric on its own is poorly absorbed?

Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, has naturally low bioavailability. That means much of it passes through the digestive system before your body has a chance to absorb and use it.

One of the simplest ways to improve absorption is by adding black pepper.

Black pepper contains piperine, a natural compound that works by slowing the breakdown of curcumin in the gut and liver, while also increasing intestinal absorption. This allows more curcumin to enter the bloodstream and remain available for longer.

In a landmark human study, researchers found that adding 20 mg of piperine to 2 g of curcumin increased curcumin bioavailability by 2000% (around 20-fold) compared with curcumin alone.¹

That’s exactly why we’ve included organic black pepper in Forest Super Foods Turmeric+. We don’t just focus on what goes into our products. We also think about how well your body can actually use it.

Whole food ingredients. Thoughtfully combined. Nothing unnecessary.

Vitamin B12 is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide, yet many people don’t realise they’re running low until symptoms begin to affect daily life.

Vitamin B12 is essential for:
• Energy production
• Healthy nerve function
• Red blood cell formation
• Brain health, memory and concentration
• DNA synthesis

Low B12 levels can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, poor memory, low mood and anaemia.

While a low intake of animal foods can increase the risk of deficiency, many people become deficient because they are unable to absorb enough B12, even if they’re eating it.

Certain medications are known to reduce B12 absorption over time, including:
• Metformin, commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes
• Proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole, esomeprazole and pantoprazole) used for reflux
• H2 blockers such as famotidine
• Long term use of some antacids

As we age, stomach acid production naturally declines, making B12 absorption more difficult. This means older adults are also at greater risk of deficiency.

When it comes to food, beef liver is one of nature’s richest sources of vitamin B12. Gram for gram, it provides substantially more B12 than most other foods, along with highly bioavailable vitamin A (retinol), folate, iron, choline, copper and many other essential nutrients that work together as they do in nature.

Rather than relying on isolated nutrients, whole food sources like beef liver deliver a broad spectrum of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in a form that humans have consumed for generations.

If you’re feeling persistently tired, experiencing brain fog, tingling sensations, or you’re taking medications that may reduce B12 absorption, it may be worth discussing your B12 status with your healthcare practitioner.

Nature’s original multivitamin still deserves its place on the table.

July is an invitation to slow down.

Winter isn’t a season to push harder. It’s a season to restore.

As the days become shorter and colder, our bodies naturally benefit from more rest, warming meals, gentle movement, and time outdoors in the morning light. Supporting your health doesn’t have to mean doing more. Often, it’s about doing the simple things consistently.

This month, focus on:
• Nourishing your body with whole, warming foods
• Prioritising quality sleep
• Getting outside for fresh air and natural light
• Moving in ways that leave you feeling energised, not exhausted
• Making time for moments of stillness

Small daily habits become the foundation of long term health.

You can’t buy longevity. You build it.

The anti-aging industry wants to sell you $90 serums and mystery supplements. But when you actually look at the science, the things with the strongest human evidence are almost all free.

Move your body every day. Eat real, mostly-plant food. Sleep 7–9 hours. Wear sunscreen. Stay close to the people you love. That’s not the exciting answer, but it’s the one the research keeps landing on.

I put the whole picture into 9 slides , the foods worth eating, why exercise is the closest thing we have to an anti-aging drug,
