_________

On the way to the airport this morning ✈️

As usual, I started chatting with the driver.

👨🏻: “What do you do?”

👩🏻: “I’m a music therapist. I specialise in supporting bilingual and multicultural communities in Australia.

We use music to support people with different therapeutic needs. Our practice now has 5 music therapists and 2 creative arts therapists. We mainly work with children with developmental needs and disabilities, such as autism and ADHD, but we also support adults with mental health needs, and older adults with neurological conditions such as dementia.”

👨🏻: “Wow… that’s an amazing job.”

👩🏻: “Yeah, it’s a very meaningful job. But it’s not always easy. Our practice relies quite heavily on government funding through the NDIS, and if you’ve been following the news, there have been lots of policy changes and discussions around that…”

And then the conversation went on… about music therapy, the NDIS, and of course, a little bit of music therapy advocacy. 😆

I love, love, LOVE my job. ❤️🎶

Because in so many ordinary situations — even a random conversation with a driver on the way to the airport — I get a chance to introduce what music therapy is.

A chance to explain what we actually do.

A chance to help one more person understand the value of our profession.

And a chance to advocate.

Advocacy doesn’t always happen in meetings, conferences, submissions or big campaigns.

Sometimes, it simply starts with:

**“So… what do you do?”** 🎶❤️

From criminology to music therapy — quite a career change, right? 😆🎶

Before becoming a Music Therapist, I spent over 15 years teaching criminology — crime, violence, homicide, prisons, policing and criminal behaviour. My first Master’s research was even on child homicide.

Looking back, though, the two careers aren’t as disconnected as they seem.
Criminology taught me to look beyond labels, think critically, and keep asking:

Why? Why not? Whose voice is missing? Who gets access — and who doesn’t?

Those questions still shape my work today — especially my advocacy for clients, bilingual families and bilingual therapists.

But therapy taught me something else too: sometimes we don’t need to analyse.

Sometimes we simply need to slow down, listen, stay present, and accept the person in front of us.
Leaving a stable career wasn’t easy — but I’d make that choice again. ❤️🎶

A placement student recently asked me:

”What’s the most difficult thing about being a music therapist?“

After nearly 10 years in this profession, my answer isn‘t clinical skills anymore.

It’s resilience, advocacy, and self-care.

Passion might help you become a music therapist.

But resilience is what helps you stay.

To every student and therapist—keep growing your clinical skills, but don‘t forget to look after yourself too. 💙

If you’d like support in your professional journey, I‘d be grateful to walk alongside you through clinical supervision.

67–71 Springvale Road, Nunawading

Oh Lou, I honestly couldn’t be happier for you and Cath. ❤️
I know it’s been a few months already, but I still feel like screaming with excitement for you both!

Thank you for always being so supportive and encouraging over the years. It’s my blessing to know you—not only as an incredible music therapist, but as such a generous and inspiring person.

One thing inspired me today: no matter where life takes us or what job we’re doing, once we’re a music therapist, that identity stays with us. We carry it into every conversation, every relationship, and every part of our lives.

Coming from someone with more than 20 years in music therapy, those words mean so much to me. They encourage me deeply and remind me why I fell in love with this profession in the first place.

Thank you Lou ❤️

This morning, I had a lovely young client from a Korean family. She’s bilingual in Korean and English, and even knows a little Mandarin from school.
She is such a bright, thoughtful little girl. Beneath that, though, she carries a complicated family story and faces significant challenges with her mental health and self-esteem.
During our music therapy session, we sang our hello and goodbye songs in four different languages—Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.
I assumed she’d be most confident teaching me the Korean lyrics (which I don’t know at all!). To my surprise, she sang most confidently in Mandarin. It was such a beautiful reminder that language, identity, and confidence don’t always fit the assumptions we make.
Moments like this are why I love music therapy.
In a multicultural country like Australia, music becomes a space where different languages and cultures are not just acknowledged—they’re celebrated. Every language a child brings into the room is a strength, and it’s a privilege to help them feel seen, heard, and empowered through music.
I love these moments.
I love this work. ❤️
