Jacinta Elston, VCCC Alliance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Co-Lead, will be speaking at an upcoming public lecture, Equity, Rights and the Future of Global Health on Thursday 22 October, alongside international keynote speaker Professor Ophira Ginsburg, Chair of The Lancet Commission on Women, Power and Cancer, and a panel of local and regional experts.

Please register by Monday 19 October: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/equity-rights-and-the-future-of-global-health-tickets-2000905255482?aff=oddtdtcreator

The thought-provoking discussion will explore the future of global health and the non-communicable disease agenda in the context of conflict, climate related crises, economic uncertainty, reduced development assistance and growing challenges to human rights. It will also examine the intersections between cancer, gender, equity, health systems and rights, and the role Australia can play in advancing equitable, sustainable and resilient health solutions.

The event is proudly co-hosted by Equitable Cancer Outcome Across Rural and Remote Australia (ECORRA) Program, Deakin University, the McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer at Cancer Council Victoria, the Australian Network of WHO Collaborating Centres and the Australian Global Health Alliance.

Victoria has some of the best cancer outcomes in the world - but not for everyone. A major symposium convened by the VCCC Alliance earlier this year exposed widening gaps in who benefits from the state's leading cancer system.

Over 260 cancer sector leaders, researchers, clinicians and consumer advocates gathered earlier this year to confront the uncomfortable truth: equity in cancer care remains elusive.

The symposium explored the drivers of cancer inequities, critical health equity concepts, and actionable solutions that are evidence-based and scalable. One message was clear: redressing cancer inequities will require cross-sector collaboration, culturally safe care, community voices and leadership commitment at every level.

A full report for the Advancing Equity in Cancer Outcomes Symposium is now available to download from the VCCC Alliance website at https://vcccalliance.org.au/health-equity/resources/vccc-alliance-equity-symposium-report

Since 2017, the Picchi Brothers Foundation has supported emerging cancer researchers through the Picchi Awards, recognising research excellence and providing recipients with financial support to further their work and professional development. This year, we congratulate three outstanding PhD researchers who will each receive $10,000 to support their journey towards research independence:

Basic Science: Vicky Qin, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Clinical Science: Sarah Glewis, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Population Health: Amelia Hyatt, the University of Melbourne and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Hear more about their work in our next Monday Lunch Live webinar on 12 October: https://bit.ly/4hBVLY8

In partnership with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute - MCRI, we are proud to launch the Health Research for All (HRFA) Hub, a public resource to support health researchers across Australia plan, design and conduct more inclusive research. We look forward to sharing what we've built and hearing from our collaborators. Join us online tomorrow to celebrate this milestone: https://bit.ly/4i3aLzP

VCCC Alliance Chief Executive Officer Prof David Ashley, will be presenting at the launch, alongside Prof Kathryn North AC, Dr Saraid Billiards and Dr Helene Kammoun. Prof Ashley will share how the VCCC Alliance Cancer Equity Framework, through our Health Equity program and with support from the Victorian Department of Health, is helping to build shared capability through broader investment in equity infrastructure. We look forward to seeing you online.

We are pleased to share our latest Annual Report for 2025-2026, and what a year it has been. It was a year of change for the organisation, welcoming new leadership, while continuing to demonstrate measurable impact across our programs. Download: https://bit.ly/4hKAhZe

It was a year of tireless advocacy, from the Spotlight on Cancer in Victoria exhibition at Parliament House to our work behind the scenes in the lead up to the State Election.

It was also a year of celebration, with the 10th anniversary of our Clinical Translation Network, the Cancer Consumer Advisory Committee, and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre building, alongside other wins and notable achievements.

As we continue to acknowledge the scale of the challenge ahead, we look forward to strengthening partnerships and collaboration to build a cancer system worthy of every Victorian.

Ten years ago, the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre building opened with a bold vision: to make cancer care better, fairer, and more integrated through collaboration. Today, that vision has become a reality within this precinct. A special thanks to Minister Ingrid Stitt MP for taking the time to mark this important occasion, and to everyone whose dedication brings this building to life every day.

Over the past decade, this building has become an internationally recognised hub for cancer research, treatment, education and translation. It created a place where outstanding minds could work side by side – where discovery could meet clinical care, where education could strengthen practice, and where research could be translated into better outcomes for patients.

No single organisation can solve cancer alone. As the VCCC Alliance looks ahead to the next decade, our challenge is to extend this collaborative model beyond our walls – strengthening statewide networks so every Victorian can access timely, high-quality cancer care, no matter their postcode. Here’s to the power of partnership, discovery, and hope.

When designing education for rural cancer workers, who better to lead than those who've lived through cancer care? The VCCC Alliance's National Education Support Strategy puts lived experience expertise at its heart, with consumer advocates co-leading design, implementation, and evaluation from day one.

On behalf of regional co-lead and lived experience expert Melissa Sheldon, Dr Samuel Harris shares why lived experience expertise isn't an add-on to this program. It's the foundation. Rural Australians face a stark reality: they are 10% less likely to survive cancer than their urban counterparts. Since January 2025, a national education strategy has been working to level the playing field.

At the National Rural Health Conference in Adelaide, Dr Samuel Harris, VCCC Alliance Regional Research and Education Lead, shared how the strategy equips rural and remote cancer healthcare workers with specialist training comparable to metropolitan clinicians. Early results are compelling. Learn more: https://vcccalliance.org.au/news-and-events/news/closing-the-rural-cancer-education-gap

Delivered in partnership with Melanoma Institute Australia, a new free online course from the VCCC Alliance is helping nurses build the scientific knowledge and clinical confidence needed to support people with melanoma through increasingly complex treatment pathways. More: https://vcccalliance.org.au/news-and-events/news/melanoma-biology-course-translates-science-into-clinical-practice

Co-designed with people with lived experience of melanoma, the self-paced course was developed as a core component of a broader national education program.

Available through the VCCC Alliance Centre for Cancer Education (CCE), the Melanoma Biology: Translating Science to Clinical Practice course comprises five interactive modules, with approximately six hours of learning covering the biology of melanoma, risk factors and indicators of disease progression, personalised and shared treatment decision-making, and advanced communication and patient education strategies.
