APPLICATIONS OPEN: UNSW Private Law Moot 2026🏆
Applications are now open to represent the University of Melbourne in the 2026 UNSW Law Society Private Law Moot (PLM).
Now in its 12th year, the UNSW Private Law Moot is the first and only intervarsity mooting competition in Australia dedicated to private and commercial law. Founded by UNSW Law & Justice alumni Lyndon Goddard and Rohit Sud, the competition has grown into one of the most prestigious specialist moots in the country, attracting outstanding competitors and a distinguished judging panel of leading barristers, solicitors, and academics.
The competition is held on campus at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and financial assistance for flights and accommodation will be provided for selected competitors.
In 2025, the Grand Final was judged by The Honourable Justice Jeremy Kirk, alongside Professor Simone Degeling and Dr Nuncio D’Angelo (Norton Rose Fulbright), with past judges including Tom Bathurst and John Sackar AM KC.
Teams consist of 2–4 students and may be supported by a coach.
Consistent with the competition’s commitment to equity and inclusion, teams must include at least one member who identifies as female or non-cis male in order to progress to the final rounds. The MULSS will attempt to organise a coach for the selected team.
Applications close: Sunday 22nd March 2026
Timeline:
● Thursday 2 April: Problem question released to competitors
● Monday 6 April: Clarification questions due from competitors
● Friday 10 April: Responses to clarifications returned to competitors
● Monday 4 May: Written submissions (appellant and respondent) due
● Friday 22 May: Competitors welcome to campus
● Saturday 23 May: Preliminary Round 1
● Sunday 24 May: Preliminary Round 2
● Monday 25 May: Quarter Finals and Semi Finals
● Tuesday 26 May: Grand Final and Awards Night
