Why Do We Keep Going Back to Old Patterns?

Have you ever caught yourself reacting to a situation and thought,

"Why do I keep doing that?"

Maybe it's the same self-doubt.
The same fear.
The same relationship pattern.
The same inner critic.

Even when we know these patterns aren't helping us, we often find ourselves repeating them.

Why?

Because our brains are designed to keep us safe - not necessarily to help us grow.

If a thought, behaviour or emotional response has protected us in the past, our brain stores it as familiar. The challenge is that what once helped us cope may now be holding us back from living the life we truly want.

The encouraging news is that our brains are incredibly adaptable.

With awareness, curiosity and the right support, we can begin to recognise the unconscious patterns running in the background and gently create new ones that better reflect who we are today - not the experiences we've carried from yesterday.

One of the greatest privileges of my work is witnessing those moments when someone suddenly recognises a pattern they've been living with for years and realises:

"It doesn't have to be this way anymore."

Real change doesn't begin with forcing yourself to be different.

It begins with understanding what's been quietly shaping your thoughts, emotions and behaviours all along.

💙 Is there a habit, belief or pattern you're ready to leave behind?

If you're ready to gently uncover the unconscious patterns that may be holding you back, I'd love to support you on your journey.

10 Days of Wisdom with Dr Joe Dispenza

Recently, I had the privilege of attending another immersive 10 day retreat with Dr Joe Dispenza.

Most people who know me know how much I've been inspired by Joe's work over the years. What resonates with me is the way he combines neuroscience with practical experiences that help people move beyond old patterns and beliefs.

This time, I arrived with a very personal intention.

I wanted to release some unconscious blocks related to ongoing rib pain, sleep more deeply, and trust that my body knows how to heal when I give it what it needs.

After the very first workshop, my intention became even clearer:

"I surrender with ease and grace to a more magnificent life."

One of the most powerful moments came during an intensive breathwork session. Joe kept encouraging us to *soften our hearts*, reminding us that when we're more relaxed in our hearts, we're more open to receiving.

What happened next is difficult to put into words.

I was flooded with memories of the loving, kind and compassionate connections I've shared throughout my life - both personally and professionally, especially with people I've supported at the end of their lives.

The overwhelming message I felt was simply:

"You are truly loved."

It was the same deep, unconditional love I feel for my son - but for the first time, I felt that love directed towards myself.

I know I talk a lot about love, but this was different. It wasn't about needing validation from others. It was about finally believing that everything I'd been searching for externally already existed within me.

Another lesson I'll be taking home is the importance of slowing down. The breathwork wasn't simply about breathing differently - it was about helping my body feel safe enough to let go of old struggles and create space for something new.

I also recognised how easily I'd carried the habit of struggle into the work I love. I realised I can trust myself more, trust my clients more, and allow healing to happen with greater ease, joy and lightness.

One of the greatest gifts was sharing this experience with my husband. Watching us both release old blocks has brought an even deeper sense of kindness, compassion and connection into our relationship. We have become accountability partners, supporting each other to continue making time to surrender, receive and remain open to new possibilities.

I'm returning home feeling incredibly grateful, refreshed and excited to bring these insights into both my own life and my work with clients.

A heartfelt thank you to Alison for so beautifully caring for our clients while I was away. I can't wait to see everyone again soon. 💙

If you're feeling ready to let go of old patterns, reconnect with yourself, or simply explore what's possible, we'd love to support you on your own journey.

Men's Health Week is a reminder that wellbeing isn't just about physical health.

Sometimes stress doesn't look like stress at all.

For many men, it can show up as:

• irritability or frustration
• withdrawing from family and friends
• working longer hours
• difficulty switching off
• feeling emotionally flat or disconnected
• carrying pressure silently

Because these responses can seem "normal", it's easy to overlook what's happening underneath.

Many men are used to pushing through challenges, solving problems, and keeping things moving. While those qualities can be strengths, they can also make it harder to recognise when stress and pressure are building up.

This Men's Health Week, perhaps the question isn't:

**"Am I coping?"**

Perhaps it's:

**"How am I really doing?"**

Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is pause long enough to notice the answer.

If you're finding yourself stuck in patterns of stress, frustration, overwhelm, or emotional exhaustion, support is available.

You don't have to carry everything on your own.

Some People Don’t Struggle to Relax - They Struggle to Feel Safe Slowing Down

Around World Meditation Day, there’s often a lot of conversation about slowing down, being still, or “switching off.”

But for many people, slowing down doesn’t actually feel calming at first.

It can feel uncomfortable.

Because when the mind and body have been in survival mode for a long time, stillness can feel unfamiliar - even unsafe.

Some people have become so used to:
• overthinking
• staying busy
• carrying responsibility
• solving problems
• anticipating stress
• looking after everyone else

…that silence or stillness can feel almost impossible to settle into.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing at relaxation.

It often means your nervous system has spent a long time trying to protect you.

Meditation and mindfulness aren’t really about “clearing the mind perfectly.”

Sometimes they simply create small moments where the body starts learning that it doesn’t have to stay on high alert all the time.

And often, that’s where healing begins.

If this resonates with you, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone.
At Bayside Healthy Living, we support people to better understand the patterns, stress responses and emotional blocks that may be keeping them stuck in survival mode - so they can reconnect with a calmer, healthier version of themselves.

What Your Emotional Triggers Are Telling You

Most people see emotional triggers as something to get rid of.

The reaction feels bigger than it should, uncomfortable, and sometimes hard to explain, so the instinct is to push it away or just move on.

But triggers are rarely random.

They’re often pointing to something underneath the surface - for example:
• an old pattern that keeps repeating
• a past experience that hasn’t been fully processed or released
• a belief about yourself or others that’s been sitting there for a long time

That’s why the reaction can feel out of proportion to what’s happening in the moment. It’s not just about now - it’s connected to something earlier.

Dr Joe Dispenzer suggests that 90% of our responses are based in the past, and only 10% is about what is happening in the present.

When you start to look at triggers with curiosity instead of frustration, things begin to shift:
• you understand yourself more clearly
• you can see where the reaction is coming from
• it becomes easier to respond differently to the now situation , rather than repeating the same past cycle

This is a big part of the work we do at Bayside Healthy Living, helping you gently uncover and shift these patterns in a way that feels safe and manageable, freeing you from the past responses makes it easier to deal with today.

You don’t have to keep reacting the same way.

If you’ve noticed the same feelings showing up in certain situations, it might be worth exploring what’s underneath.

You don't need to fix everything...

It’s easy to feel like everything needs to change at once.

You might notice patterns you don’t like, habits that aren’t helping, or areas of life that feel out of balance - and suddenly it can feel overwhelming.

So nothing changes.

Not because you don’t want to…
but because it all feels like too much.

The truth is, you don’t need to fix everything.

You just need a starting point.

Often, meaningful change begins much more simply than people expect:
• noticing what keeps coming up for you
• recognising one pattern you’re ready to shift
• being honest about what’s actually not working anymore
• taking one small step, rather than trying to overhaul everything

When you focus on one area at a time, things start to feel more manageable.

You build momentum.
You feel more in control.
And change becomes something you can actually sustain, not something that burns you out.

At Bayside Healthy Living, we take a very individual approach. There’s no pressure to “fix it all”, just a supportive space to work through what matters most to you, at your pace.

If you’ve been feeling stuck or overwhelmed, this might be your reminder that you don’t have to solve everything today.

You can just start here - in whatever way feels right for you.

Taking a Break Isn’t a Luxury - It’s Essential Maintenance

Amanda is currently taking a well-earned break - and it’s a timely reminder of something we often overlook…

Rest isn’t something you earn once you’re exhausted.
It’s something that helps prevent you from getting there in the first place.

So many people push through:

“I’ll rest when things settle down”
“It’s not a good time right now”
“I just need to get through this next bit”

But the reality is… there’s always a “next bit.”

Without intentional pauses, the mind and body don’t get the chance to reset.
And over time, that can show up as:

– mental fatigue
– overwhelm or irritability
– feeling disconnected or flat

A proper break - whether it’s a holiday or simply stepping out of your routine - creates space.

Space to breathe.
Space to reset.
Space to come back clearer.

You don’t have to wait until you’re burnt out to take a break.

When was the last time you truly switched off - not just physically, but mentally?

You don’t have to wait until you’re burnt out to take a break.

When was the last time you truly switched off - not just physically, but mentally?

If you’ve been feeling stretched or stuck in “go mode” for too long, it might be time to reset.

We’re here to support you when you’re ready.

Warmest Regards,
Amanda and Alison

A Few Updates from Bayside Healthy Living

As our clinic continues to evolve, we wanted to share a few updates with our community.

Firstly, Tara will be moving on to a new role. We are incredibly grateful for her loyalty, support and persistence in helping clients find session times that suited their busy schedules. Tara has been a valued part of Bayside Healthy Living and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Alison is now well into her second year at Bayside Healthy Living, working alongside Amanda as a therapist. Alison has been loving her time in the clinic and has recently expanded her session availability, including some out-of-hours appointments, to help accommodate new clients.

After more than 13 years of supporting clients, Amanda has made the decision to slightly reduce her clinic load. For the first time, she has also paused accepting new clients so she can continue providing the best possible care and availability for those she is already working with.

Over the coming weeks we will also be trialling an online calendar system. This will allow existing clients to easily rebook or reschedule sessions with Amanda, and see Alison’s availability.

The calendar will also include 15-minute complimentary consultations with Alison, offering a gentle entry point for new clients who are curious about our work and would like to explore whether our approach feels right for them.

We will send you a link as soon as we have trialled and tested the new system – you will be the first to know.

As always with small business transitions, we truly value the feedback, ideas and suggestions from our community as we continue working to provide the best possible experience for our clients.

Warmest regards,
Amanda Hordern
