New patient information resources now available on corneaeyedoctor.com, the clinical education website of our Practice Director Dr Ross MacIntyre.

Three detailed guides have been published covering what patients can expect from LASIK, PRK, and corneal crosslinking. Each guide explains the procedure in plain language, including preparation, what happens at the laser centre, pain management in the first few days, the antibiotic and steroid drop regimen, vision recovery timelines, and time off work.

These guides are written for patients preparing for surgery and for optometrists who want reliable resources to share with patients before referral.

Visit corneaeyedoctor.com for the full guides.

Diabetes is one of the most common causes of preventable vision loss in Australia. Diabetic retinopathy affects the small blood vessels at the back of the eye and can progress silently before causing noticeable vision changes. By the time vision is affected, significant damage may already have occurred.
At Northern Eye Consultants, our medical retina subspecialists assess and manage diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema for patients across Melbourne's northern suburbs. Intravitreal injection therapy with anti-VEGF agents is the current gold standard treatment for diabetic macular oedema, the most common cause of vision loss in diabetic eye disease. These injections are performed in our consulting rooms at Northpark Private Hospital, Bundoora, and are well tolerated by the vast majority of patients.
If you have diabetes, regular eye examinations are essential even if your vision feels normal. Early detection and treatment significantly improves outcomes. Your optometrist or GP can refer you to Northern Eye Consultants for assessment.
Key facts about diabetic eye disease:
Around one in three people with diabetes has some degree of diabetic retinopathy. Vision loss from diabetic macular oedema is treatable with intravitreal injections if detected early. All patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should have regular dilated eye examinations. Poorly controlled blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol all accelerate retinal damage.

If you are considering cataract surgery and wondering about premium lens options, two new guides are now available. The first covers all full range of vision intraocular lenses available in Australia in 2026, comparing their optical designs, visual acuity outcomes, contrast sensitivity, and dysphotopsia profiles. The second provides a detailed look at the Clareon PanOptix Pro trifocal lens specifically.
These resources are written to help patients understand their options before their consultation and to help referring optometrists counsel patients on what to expect.

πŸ‘οΈ Is it time to do something about your cataracts?

Cataracts are one of the most common β€” and most treatable β€” causes of vision loss in Australia. Yet many people put off seeking help, unsure whether their symptoms are "bad enough" to act on.

Here are some signs it may be time to see an ophthalmologist:

βœ… Difficulty driving, especially at night (glare, halos around lights)
βœ… Struggling to read, watch TV, or recognise faces
βœ… Glasses no longer giving a satisfying correction
βœ… Colours appearing washed out or yellowed
βœ… Your optometrist has noted a visually significant cataract

The good news: cataract surgery is safe, effective, and performed as a day procedure. Modern techniques mean most patients notice an improvement within days. For eligible patients, surgery can be performed in the public system β€” and for those who want to choose their surgeon, timing, and lens type, private surgery is also available.

At Northern Eye Consultants, Dr Ross MacIntyre, Dr Xavier Fagan and associates offer cataract surgery at Northpark Private Hospital in Bundoora, serving patients across Melbourne's northern suburbs.

πŸ“‹ For optometrists and GPs: we welcome referrals for cataract assessment, second opinions, and complex cases including patients with corneal disease or previous refractive surgery. Urgent referrals are accommodated.
