Perfectionism is more than having high standards.

It is important to distinguish between healthy striving and perfectionistic concerns.

Children with healthy striving are motivated by learning, growth and doing their best. They can tolerate mistakes, adapt when things don't go to plan, and their self-worth isn't dependent on achievement.

In contrast, perfectionistic concerns involve a fear of making mistakes, harsh self-criticism, and worry about not meeting expectations or disappointing others. Children may avoid challenges unless they're certain they'll succeed, become highly distressed by small mistakes, or feel that nothing they do is ever "good enough." These are consistently linked with higher rates of anxiety, depression and emotional distress.

The goal isn't to lower your child's standards. It's to help them develop high standards without high perfectionistic concerns.

Parents can support this by:
✔️ Normalising mistakes as part of learning.
✔️ Praising effort, persistence and problem-solving rather than perfect outcomes.
✔️ Modelling self-compassion when things don't go to plan.
✔️ Reinforcing that their worth isn't defined by their achievements.

Here’s what I see every day as a child psychologist working with boys:
They are flooded with emotions they don’t yet have the words or the brain development to manage.
They are taught that expressing feelings isn’t “manly,” that they should toughen up, not cry, and sort things out themselves.
Add in a world of gaming and social media feeding them ideas, many are left believing the safest thing to do with a feeling is bury it.
As a result the behaviours often show up as anger, withdrawal, aggression, shutting down, or defiance.

Help your son make sense of what’s happening inside them by improving their emotional literacy, emotional regulation, introceptive awarness and coping and communication skills.

Children can feel nervous or anxious before a cognitive assessment. Amy’s approach to assessments is to make the child feel as comfortable as possible, which helps the child relax and produce more accurate results.

Many parents wonder how they should prepare their child for an assessment.

The answer is simple: keep it honest and age-appropriate. Let your child know they will be meeting someone who wants to learn about how they think, learn, and experience the world.

There is no studying, practising, or preparing required. The most helpful thing your child can do is simply be themselves.

What that looks like is up to you and your child. That could be joining sessions, a quick catch-up before pick-up, an email check-in between appointments, or progress updates along the way.

For many families, the greatest benefit of identification is not the diagnosis. It is the understanding that comes with it.

Understanding why a child experiences the world differently can help guide support, reduce uncertainty, and provide a clearer path forward for families and schools.

When children are understood, they are better supported.
